I called the raise playing for set value, then the flop came down and I felt like I was getting good odds....

Two or three people at the table told me it was horrible to stay in. In isolation it looks okay to me. Long term, is it? My plan was to fold to any sizable bet or raise/reraise, both on the flop and the turn. I wasn't going anywhere on the river....74o was just inconcievable.

Also, stack sizes are something I am weak on (factoring into my decisions, etc.). What should I be looking for with the stacks involved?

I fold the flop. If you catch a 4 you can't be really happy (board of 2346 is scary) about it and there are only three 5's you are looking for (you don't want to see ). So you basically have 3 clean outs and aren't getting good enough odds to draw to them. But if I know that if I catch one of my 4's and the weak betting will continue on the turn, then I may stay in and hope to draw cheap to fill up on river. If you know your opponents will bet weak most of the time then this was OK I think. If you can't be very sure of this then fold flop.

didn't think about the implications of hitting my trips while deciding to call. All I would have seen is a chance to fill up. I saw my 4s as outs. Good point.
