Hai Friends
I plan to start playing poker part time . I'm trying to make it like a job and want to plan everything out. I would just like to hear the golden rules when trying to play.I plan on playing 1/2 no limit holdem live.

Anything would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Hrmm. I dont really know what to say to this post.
Poker is a game of extreme mental discipline. Control your emotions...and you'll make money.
Good luck.

Best lesson I learnt early was that money not lost is as good as money won. A common error for new players is to win small pots and lose big ones. Try to have a big hand when you're involved in a big pot, or get out.
Just playing to improve.

I luv this - as with most of your answers Fnord. Succinct and to the point - and also spot on.

You win the most money from bad players. Play your cards in a way that will have you playing more hands against bad players.

Don't play 1/2 NL live as your only source of income. I think you would need to absolutely destroy these games in order to earn a decent wage, and if you can absolutely destroy them, you might as well play higher.

Learn about position, and at the start of your career have the attitude that "If I'm not going to raise, I'm going to fold" - calling is advanced play.

Here's some unofficial rules, but good ones nonetheless...

Golden Rules of Poker

Maximize the size of pots you win; minimize the amount of money you lose.

When deciding whether or not to call, factor the amount of money being asked of you in relation to the amount of money in the pot.

Avoid playing too consistently; take note of the consistencies of your opponents.

Know the players at the table; adjust your playing style accordingly.

Be aware of tells in yourself; be aware of tells in others.

Utilize bluffing; bluff with the best-balanced frequency to maximize its usefulness.

Practice inexpensive advertising to create false impressions of your playing style.

Don't keep small, breakable objects within reach-when you get someone all-in and he catches a 2-outer on the river, you'll end up having to order a new control for your surround sound =/
