seemed like a reasonable, but aggressive player, no bad calls seen yet.
how do you get around it when this shit keeps happening all day, and you just dont get the right flops etc ???

Easy call.
Too many beaten hands make that move. Any pocket pair over to the board for instance.

You mean the revolver, sir?
Precisely.

how can you say for certain though, or is it from your experience and others that in this case more than 50% of the time it's just pair and not a set?

It's much more often the pair that you're dominating.
Unless you know the player likes to drop the hammer when he makes his dominating hand.
You'll notice that opponents often call/push with very, very silly hands.

so this is truly from your experience ? its so hard when you have no clue what they actually have and you dont find out.
is your reasoning that if someone really had trips, they'd re-raise to double your bet, or they'd just call to keep you in ? (hence a set is unlikely to re-raise THIS much?)

Right. A set is going to want action. A pair is going to want AK to get the hell out.
He had a pair and he wanted your hand the hell out.
You have a very nature style that inclines towards a weak/tight style that you're going to need to shed. You need to start calling with aces here and get a feel for exactly what your opposition is pushing at you with. You should eventually get a sense of what your opponents are capable of and that will allow you to beat them soundly through difficult decisions.

Aces were probably good. And probably is definately good enough to call.
On a side note - Aces you need to bankroll me

thanks 'rilla, i know i have a lot to learn but I think i'm at a point where i have a reasonably good game, just needs specific amount of fine tuning. i make mostly good calls, reasonable reads and put down some tough folds as well.
i do call often enough with good calls that it's not overly weak, however. but i'm glad i can post on here and get some advice from more experienced players.
i'm feeling much more confident about this particular hand now that i've had feedback and given it more thought myself.
