True, but the only hands you are behind are 22, 89 and 99. Most villains won't lead 22 (or even 89) on that flop. 99 is quite the longshot too. I think a call is in order.

Some days it feels like I've been standing forever, waiting for the bank teller to return so I can cash in all these Sklansky Bucks.

usually these ridiculous overbets are from hands such as those 3, hoping to get any 8 to call. it seems pretty obvious that i have an 8 here, so i doubt he's trying to push me off of it. i kind of regretted the fold immediately after, but a part of me still thinks there was a good chance he had me.

Either that, or he figured it for the split as well and decided to push you off with your 1/2 pot sized bet at the end showing weakness.

I think 8x does this a lot hoping you have a 2 in your hand as well. I really can't see folding here.

Not my stakes, but--
I think you need to decide on your course of action before you do anything on the river. I'd rather check/call than bet/fold to a raise since any 8 could do this. He could have 98 or 99, but if we're *that* concerned about those two hands, I don't see any reason to do anything other than check the river behind since you're either splitting the pot or losing at showdown (barring some sick read that villain can float all the way to the river with an underpair).

don't fold. i think most of the time it's a split pot. 99 is the most worrying hand. but it's such a longshot. i think a split pot is way, way, way more likely and therefore i think you should call
