Luring people in with a higher set when they are drawing dead is fun!

Once he made that 9$ bet on the turn, I knew exactly what he had heh. Hence the raise on the turn (so the pot gets big enough for me to take his stack on the river).

If I know he has a set, I'm raising the turn hard.

The flop check really sucks. You gotta consider at least half pot for balance.

Why bet the flop? Then everyone folds

But they're not expecting a high set like that to bet...so you might get some calls

But he's almost NEVER going to get his 3rd 8 on the turn/river...so by your reasoning you're never getting paid off

Because I don't let players get a strong-when-weak weak-when-strong read on me. I bet lots of flops to cover for all the times I don't have anything. So when I do have it I must bet or my checks become a sign of either great strength or great weakness and nothing in between.

I c-bet that flop because I c-bet every flop. But I'd make it a nice easy c-bet.

The 88 might call anyway. I've seen 'em do it plenty of times.

As 'rilla would say.. stop being so results oriented. This is an easy flop bet IMO, being the preflop raiser. Generally, if you get folds here, you wouldn't have made much money on this hand anyway. You were fortunate enough that the poker gods put an 8 on the turn...

might i add, the preflop raise (rather hefty) then check on the flop often screams slowplay. it's already been said, but a flop bet is important to disguise your intentions and hinder reads.

in this particular case it worked out beautifully, but in general you can't expect a lower PP to hit a set - and if someone were to spike two pair on the turn, for instance, they might still be wary of a big hand because of the flop check.

just some incoherent thoughts before i go to sleep...
