So how poorly is this hand played? Also, I realize K9o is trash but I felt like with only one limper I could at the very least get the hand heads up, in position. I continuation bet the flop with nothing and get a call. He checks to me on the turn, should I take the free river card, or fire another bluff out there? With no reads, I figure he could check-call with a Q and I could push him off on the turn after he checks. But the board pair he could be slowplaying an 8 if he called a raise with it preflop.

Tough call - if you had aces or kings what would you have done on the turn? Bet the slightly more than half pot or bet the pot?
You still have outs to the straight here and a king 'might' help you on the river.
Hard to tell if this guy has 78/89/9T or QJ/AJ/KJ ... letting it go is likely the right move.
I get tricked up about continuation betting too...folks seem to say check/fold the turn...and ya lost $4 - not too bad.

The Steal didn't work, check/fold.

I'm not sure a continuation/steal is the best play here. You've got two hands, with one from MP. And you've got a paired flop and a possible straight draw.
How's your image?
So the hands that may come along here include: any 8, any Q, any pockets, JT, J9, T9. All of these except the "any Q" hand would probably check to you.
I would give up the steal right there, especially with the J on the turn.

WTF Play ABC Poker!
Once he calls the flop and you see the turn you should slow down.

There is no way he is folding on the turn to anything other than a huge bet/all-in (and even then would you really have raised pre-flop with T9? JJ maybe) - check/fold here without a shadow of a doubt.
