obv i have to bet to protect, but this a little too hard? Or am I just left bewildered that this flop did not help or at least encourage someone?!

i don't think that's too hard. another option is waiting for the button to raise and then checkraising, but i like leading out myself because a checkraise is very strong and if you lead out you can get raised anyway if the preflop raiser has anything.
