Was thinking of trying to steal the pot here, but decided against it.. do you think he had the Q or just a lower pocket pair? Would betting or raising his bet by 50$ be successful?

You would have to raise to find out if he has the Q or not. This hand is all about your read. You were out of position but why didn't you lead out? You would've been able to find out if he has anything and can check/fold on the turn if he calls.

A check raise here says "I have AA, KK, QQ or AQ". So even if he has a Q it gives him the difficult decision, not you.
