unfortunately theres never a way out of set over set, but im sure it will work to your advantage a few times as well.

I've actually avoided a few set over sets when i had position on the higher set.. unfortunately that was not the case here

No; you're screwed. Sorry. Even if you think something's up with all the checks on the flop, you're still screwed.

No way out. I'm sorry to give you this somewhat meaningless post, but anytime you have a set over set situation, the times you fold will cost you so much more money than the money you lose by seeing a showdown with set over set. Suck it up, and try to get it back later. What ya gonna do?
