This is quite possibly the best laydown ive ever made in my poker playing career.. a smaller boat to a larger one (with just a single pair on the board). The guy admitted that he had the bigger boat (and the way he said im almost certain he wasnt lying..)
I made the laydown on the account that no flushes or straights were on the board, he had bet on the flop like he had an A, and it didnt seem likely he'd ONLY have a 9. That left him with A9...
Anyhow here it is:
Btw, he was sporting A9.

The irony of it is I was actually critiqued on my play by GovernorsZoo for slowplaying the turn where he claims i should have made a bet. I however felt the slowplay was neccesary considiring I had no way of knowing he would hit a runner-runner boat and I had him beat unless he did.

After your smooth call and check on the turn he could have anything at all, from a crap ace to a middle pocket pair to a busted straight. Here's what could be going through his mind on the river. Hmm... decent pot, I bet he doesn't have the 9 or anything, really, so I'll make a big bet and rep the 9. You then come over the top for 10 more. He thinks/reacts in a flash of emotion and little thought: "Bitch, you don't have the nine, neither do I but this is my pot goddamnit, this'll show you to raise me with your weakass hand...." Allin. He might have had A9, but I think he would at least bet something on the turn when he mad a nicely camoflaged 2 pair and could get a call from a higher ace. I think the mistake you made is not at least betting something on the turn. Calling and checking looks very weak, and suddenly coming alive at the river might induce a big bluff. Any read on this guy? What was your table image? Interesting hand. I don't think I'd ever lay this down.
Also, w/r/t his telling you "A9" after the hand, that doesn't mean a lot without showing his cards.

How do you know he's not playing 25? He got a free play and checked in the BB, so he could have anything.
No way I fold that hand. Terrible fold IMO. He probably said he had A9 to you so you would keep being ridiculously tight.

Even if he does have the A9 and you lose, it doesn't mean that it would be a good fold. Laying down full houses is bad business. Too many people push on trips for me to ever lay down a full house made with a pair in my hand.

I bet you would have won off the flop unless his play it erratical and he couldnt get away from his ace.

It smells to me like he took a shot at the pot on the flop, trying to rep the A. When you called, he tried to get away from the hand, but hit his 9 on the turn. When another 9 came on the river giving him trips, he couldn't believe his eyes.
He's giving you 5-to-1 odds on the chance that you have the best hand. I think you have to call this. No way I ever lay this down.

a. I would be raising the flop and turn. You want your money going into the pot, not staying out of the pot. He could've beat you by drawing to a straight or a flush, he could've had a middle pair and hit his higher set. he could've had a9 and runner runnered a full house. he could already have two pair and fill up.
which of the things in that list that could happen by slowplaying were you trying to have happen?
b. good laydown if you know you're beat, it worked in your favor this time. but in the future, i highly advise against it. Even if i saw their cards i'd probably still call just on principle.
c. the whole problem could've been avoided if you'd gotten your money in earlier.
