Sometimes yes.
But we've already had a very similarthread within the last week or so(http://www.flopturnriver.com/phpBB2/...oker-33671.htm) so I think the same comments apply...that thread was only at $10 NL...your less than half pot bet on the flop doesn't give you enough info to determine, and anything much more pot commits you as you are no doubt aware.
Your experience/intuition is the best indicator.
I probably call and pay off the 1-2 hands that beat me and crush the other 4-5 that don't.
PokerTracker comes in handy here but doesn't solve the problem 100%.

I'm a tight bastard, and I call this. Could easily be 99-QQ as bair said. Opp may well slowplay a set with 88, and most players would reraise preflop with AA. Also I don't like folding a pretty good hand when I've already put half the effective stack in the pot.

Call, you will see ALLLLLLL sorts of junk. You are way ahead of more hands than you are behind. In fact sometimes i'll put out a little half pot bet like this to some players because it gets a reflex push from them! Once in a similar hand a guy played J9 like AA against my Kings and hit top pair and tried to buy it like this....

If he does have AA just reload and chalk it up to experience.

If he had AA he would have reraised you on the flop probably. I'm fairly certain you folded the best hand. And even in the unlikely case you put him at >50% to have AA, you only have to call roughly $11 into a $40 pot or 27.5%. So if he has AA 3 times out of 4 here, it's still a break-even decision to call!

This really is an insta-call without having to think about it.
