Good news! PokerStars now allows a lower minimum buy-in of $5 + $0.50 for private tourneys.
This means it now only costs you $5.50 per game to test your skills with the best and go for that FTR Gauntlet Champion title and trophy!
Season V starts Sunday, February 11. Register now:

Personally I say meh. Although I'm right at the border where doing well in a $10 is meaningful monetarily and is also not a big hit to my BR. I know this would be great news to the 10NL/25NL players. I would be curious what the higher stakes players think.
I know the gauntlet is a lot about bragging rights, but having a tangible prize will always make players try harder. It's possible I'm bitter because if it was $5 last season I could have played in more games.
Poll maybe?

I prefer to play in games that I am not over rolled for, but alas the gauntlet is more for fun than for money anyway. It is -EV to enter into a tournament that you know has a low percentage of donks, so why do it unless for fun? I think the $5 game is a good idea for including players of virtually any BR.

I am all for it. $10 was a little steep for alot of micro players. Most of the big timers are there for fun, not winnings. So they get their bragging rights, we get our BR management, is all goot.
Best thing to happen to the guantlet since it moved to stars.

Hey cool. I suck at SNGs, but I want to play and hang out, definitely dig the 5.50, it's cheaper entertainment!

Meh. Obviously it's great to all the low stakes grinders out there but cmon is 5$ really gonna make a difference in their BR's? (They can win more too, lol)
I just feel like I'll definitly donk off my chips at a 5$ tourney whereas I'll take a 10$ one more seriously. I'm pretty sure it''ll lower the quality play in general. Obviously a higher stakes player could say the same about a 10$ tourney vs his habitual 100$ ones, but my reasoning still holds, the lower we go the more quality of play diminishes...
I say we vote

We're talking about a full season cost of $66 vs $132. The difference is negligible for a lot of us, I know, but the real high rollers who just want to make money didn't play at $11 anyway.
As for quality of play, the league is not about the money you win in each game. It's about sharpening your MTT skills (at stakes much lower than comparably-skilled tourneys elsewhere), the comradery, title and trophy. You should always play your best.
Of course, prize money is always a nice benefit, and with the lowered buy-in, I have a feeling that the prize pools will be substantial with the increased attendance. There's a good chance they may be larger than in the $11 games of past seasons.

X is also a ruler who respects his people.
Because of you sound logic I retract my poll request. I'm convinced $5.50 is best for the community.
Now you can use this information against me. "Swig is pushing because he wants to double up and play for 1st, so he's probably weak" is a +eV gauntlet thought, write it down.

I'm willing to bet 50% of the games will have higher 1st place prizes than any game last year.
I have exactly $33 in stars. I need to do some work. My goal as to not pay from my Ring roll to play this gauntlet. I will be able to manage alot better. Thanks X.
As for the Quality of play, I would hazard a guess that having the high rollers playing even with a $20 buy in would play alot more reckless than some lesser rolled players at $5.50. They are playing for bragging rights and not the money. So playing out of character and superaggro or even Maniacle is not uncommen.

I like. Being a mid-rolla 5.50 and 11 doesn't make much difference for me BR-wise, but that does not mean that I'm going to take it less seriously at all. Even if it was a freeroll I would be in there protecting my last chip with blood. The smaller buyin will allow micro players to join in on the fun and challenge, which is what it's all about.

So very true. I haven't thought about this aspect before. I for one definitely need to get my tourney "skills" up a notch or ten.
Damn I'm psyched for this thing.

At no time during my gauntlett appearances last season did I think about money. It was all focused on beating the piss out of FTR people.

It's not what's inside that counts. Have you seen what's inside?

Not that I'm a high roller, but lowering the buy-in from $10 to $5 isn't going to make a difference in terms of dissuading people that play higher limits from playing in the Guantlet. When higher stakes players play in the Guanlet they do it for entertainment anyways so lowering the buy-in is a moot point in this regard.
In the spirit of the Guantlet I think it's a good idea because it will likely attract more players. For the people that follow the league and enjoy watching the leaderboard it will make it more enjoyable to have more participants.
Peronally, I probably won't play many games this season but I'll try to play this Sunday. In any game I do participate in this season there will be a bounty on my head. If the person to knock me out is from the US they'll receive a copy of Barry Greenstein's book "Ace on the River." Any non-US player will be receive the amount of the tournament buy-in.
