Post subject: Are you as smart as a 2nd grader? (math problem)

Don has 24 grapes. Rosa has grapes, too. Don adds to find how many they have together. He has to regroup when he adds. Does Rosa have 6, 3, or 5 grapes?
please write to explain.

I'll go for 6 because adding 6 to 24 gives an answer that isn't in the twenties.

the 6 and the 4 in the ones column are added resulting in a 0 for the ones column and a 1 carried over (i.e. regrouped, never heard this term) to the tens column.

Perhaps they are using the hashmarks counting method:
IIII = 4
IIII with a slash from top right corner to bottom left corner = a regroup.
Therefore the answer is 6 because you have to re-group the slashes.

True story, I went to one of my 2nd grade daughters class parties and participated in a similar "Are you smarter than a second grader" question. It was called "carrying" when I went to school so I had no clue what the answer was and was therefore in the FAIL category.
Now I know though so WATCH OUT!!!! Had Lukie not answered it I would have been all over it.

This was on my sons homework, and I had no fucking Idea what regrouping was either. I even googled it and got no better explaination. Then my son explained it to me.

This reminds me of when my little brother showed me how his math teacher was teaching him queue math. Seriously, it was questions about people being in line. I laughed and said I would glady turn in a blank homework for him just to laugh at the teacher in person.

he explained it basically calling it carrying...
I dont remember ever doing as much homework as I am now. I helped him do 2hrs+ tonight and my Kid is in 2nd grade! WTF!!

funny question. Is that a for grade 2? Do they know prime factors and common dividers? (right answer would be 5 as 24 and 5 have no common divider)
