Ok, so tonight i played at a dorm game at AU with some very bad players (obviously). Anyways, i come there and there is this kid who keeps criticizing people's play, but hasn't been in the action at all. So i say, "How about you get involved in some hands so i can stack you and you can stop talking?" (joking manner).
A few hands later i stack him with TP to his mid pair no kicker (LOL documents). He immediately challenges me to an 100 dollar Headsup match, to happen after the poker game ends. I politely say i'll think about it.
Here's the problem, this kid actually has a mental retardation. I'm not sure exactly what it is, it wasn't down syndrome (or maybe a mild version, i have no idea). People never told me exactly what it was.
Anyways, i was wondering what you guys would do in this situation. We'd probably play deepstacked, so i'd win like every time. Would you play this kid headsup?

QFT. People with disabilities are sick of being ostracized for being different, and are always saying we shouldnt treat them differently than anyone else.
Take his money, its the polite thing to do.

I voted "think". If the money matters to him I prob wouldn't (obv I'll never be a great poker player), if his parents hook him up then easy yes.

it seems likely that the kid has Asperger's. it's a mild form of autism. if this is the case, then he's not really being an ass. people with asperger's tend to have poor social skills and can be seen as rude or "an ass", but that is just them reacting to their very different perspective of the world.
also, if he does have asperger's then he will not be able to read or understand nonverbal cues, so any physical tells will be meaningless to him, which further slants things in your direction.
I personally would have a lot of trouble taking money from someone with asperger's in a live poker game if I knew that they had this condition, especially given that he clearly didn't know how to play properly. If he was an odds wizard (a la rainman) and actually knew how to play, then that is a different situation.

I wouldn't. I wouldn't want to embaress them either by saying no, so I'd probley offer to play for less money (5 or 10$). That seems like the best choices.

I believe AU in this case means American University. What's that saying about your school if they accept retards? I would play him and I would find out what classes he is taking and join them because you know someone is setting the curve low.

He had Cerebral Palsy.
The term cerebral palsy refers to any one of a number of neurological disorders that appear in infancy or early childhood and permanently affect body movement and muscle coordination but don’t worsen over time. Even though cerebral palsy affects muscle movement, it isn’t caused by problems in the muscles or nerves. It is caused by abnormalities in parts of the brain that control muscle movements. The majority of children with cerebral palsy are born with it, although it may not be detected until months or years later. The early signs of cerebral palsy usually appear before a child reaches 3 years of age. The most common are a lack of muscle coordination when performing voluntary movements (ataxia); stiff or tight muscles and exaggerated reflexes (spasticity); walking with one foot or leg dragging; walking on the toes, a crouched gait, or a “scissored” gait; and muscle tone that is either too stiff or too floppy. A small number of children have cerebral palsy as the result of brain damage in the first few months or years of life, brain infections such as bacterial meningitis or viral encephalitis, or head injury from a motor vehicle accident, a fall, or child abuse.
So he wasn't retarded in any way, but it would be an interesting situation if he was.

As poker players, a good number of the people we take money from are pretty messed up people. I don't think most bad players are like this, but many of them are. Some may actually be mentally retarded, and others are simply degenerates gambling away money that they or their family can't afford to lose. It's sad and I think a lot of us prefer not to think about it. That being said, some of the people in this thread getting on their high horse and saying "ZOMG how could you take a retard's money!" are off IMO. You take money from these people frequently online, and just because you can't see their faces doesn't make it any different.
Stories like this used to make me wonder whether I was doing something immoral by gambling at all, but I eventually came to a compromise. I enjoy playing poker, and most of my opponents (even the losing players) enjoy it too. That's why they play and they can afford to lose some money. If some degenerate or retard comes and sits down in my regular game, I'm not going to go out of my way to avoid him because it's his decision to play in my game. But if he wanted to leave, I wouldn't try and goad him into staying. Nor would I go out of my way to set up a special heads-up match against him either, because when I inevitably took his money, I'd be a lot more responsible for enabling him. To use an admittedly overwrought analogy, you're not obligated to save the lives of every person in the world, but you are obligated not to kill anybody.
I would not play a heads-up match against a retard.
Sorry for the long-winded post, I've just thought about this issue a fair amount and thought I'd share my thoughts here.

1. chestplate
The plate under your chest....made of bone. If someone shoots you there, you will bleed and most likely die.
I saw a guy wearing a Superman T-shirt, and I just wanted to run up to him and shoot him in the chestplate to watch him bleed. When he's lying on the ground bleeding all over, I'd walk over to him and say "Guess not!"

Surely the question is what gains more value?
Play him, perhaps take his stack and have him never want to play you again.
Or refuse to play him headsup and let him spend money trying to draw you into hands in the regular game.

FWIW, based on ISF's post(which I also found by searching), it is possible to have cerebral palsy and also be mentally handicapped. Either way I simply stated it's sad if you'd take money from someone you knew to be mentally handicapped, and I was specifically referring to the given situation(HU, home game, someone you know to be mentally handicapped). To some degree you may have an argument that you can't control this at a full table in a casino other than finding another table or leaving. But playing somebody heads up? After a home game? - that's uncalled for. Online you really can't know who you're playing. I don't worry about it as I suspect almost nobody does.
mcat - I appreciate your well-thought out comments. I have no qualms about taking money from mentally stable people who just happen to be retards with money - that's completely different IMO.
To sum, there is a huge difference between winning money from some random bad player(either live or online) and winning money HU live at a home game from someone you know has a mental handicap.

if we were talking about a severe mental handicap, like the guy couldn't take care of himself or something, I'd probably agree (e.g. downs sydrome). I didn't get that sort of impression from the OP. 'mental' handicap.. it's hard to know what exactly that means.

Give it a rest, if he's smart enough to find a game, know where to sit and can post a blind, take the fuckin money, he's ahead of half the idiots on line playing $25NL. If he knows what HU is, show him where to find an ATM. We're not discussing heading down to the local mental hospital to find some players for our home game, just some idiot that was involved at a campus game. Who brought him? Let them be responsible for what money he has and if he can play poker.

If he has CP and is at university, it's likely to be purely a physical handicap. I would have thought it'd be simple to tell but I guess not. If it is just physical, then the worst thing you could do would be to back out cos he's a tard. Because he isn't.
I have been reading a book about CP lately and it seems that the single thing they want most of all is to be able to do things everyone else does (if there are any CP sufferers on FTR and you don't think i am qualified to speak for you - I'm not - do say so).
