It's a video interview, basically this women has a church of 100 people which is 80% her family, here she displays her beliefs that the soldiers fighting in Iraq for her ability to do what she wants DESERVE TO DIE! And at funerals of fallen soldiers they carry disrespectful signs and such..must see.

Really, this family just lost someone dear to them, and you are harassing them? What the fuck? Im not trying to imply that all US soldiers are infact brave and heroic, however just because someone is misguided (IMO) doesnt make them any less of a man.
Ive seen stuff about this before and just being honest, it has crossed my mind that these are people that are actually for the war. You know? this has nothing to do with the war it has to do with gay people. her entire justification is that the U.S. is a country full of sinners feeling the wrath of god because we don't smite down gay people. the army is bad because their policy is don't ask don't tell instead of ask and lynch the gays. they just protest at soldiers funerals for the publicity.

This is one of Fred Phelps relatives from the Jonesboro Baptist Church. From what I've read, they're basically all about notoriety and making $$$--the "God Hates Fags" thing is a publicity stunt. Ignore them--it's a waste of time for anyone to pay any attention to them whatsoever.

Here in Oklahoma we made a new law it is against the law to protest within 100 yards 1 hour before during and 1 hour after a funeral. Just for the protestors...

I think flying the flag means different things depending on context. For example, in the days after 9/11, it was a show of solidarity during a tough time. At this point, after several years of bad foreign policy--the overriding flavor of which has been nationalistic arrogance--I tend to often interpret ostentatious displays of flag-waving as more of a kneejerk Republican "fuck everyone but America" type of statement.

I have to agree with Boost...I'm in the military, and when I was in basic training, I felt proud to salute our flag (just after 9/11). Now I do so more out of obligation.
Flying the flag can mean several different things, but most from other countries view it as a flag that represents intrusion and tyranny, rather than the freedom it was meant to portray.
The flag is only a symbol, and it can't represent anything except what America's people stand for, and right now we stand for "preemptive" wars and thinking that should have been done away with long ago. The oppression of homosexuals, the apathy towards education, the principle of keeping the poor and ignorant, well, poor and ignorant.
We live in an important time, we could have done ANYTHING after 9/11, we had almost full support in the world and our government had almost full support here at home. We squandered that opportunity, allowing our ideals to be sold out for religious ideology, and now we are paying the price with our reputation. Something that will take years to repair, and we haven't even begun to pull ourselves up yet.

I've lived all over the world including the Middle East and, yes, America's a pretty great place to live. The flag, well, I think people place too much value in symbols anyway, but yeah, I have respect for it.
Personally, I wouldn't fly the flag right now, b/c I'm not proud of America right now. I'm not proud of the Iraq war or our nuclear saber-rattling w/ Iran. I'm not proud of our religious fundamentalism. I'm not proud that we have 60 million people without healthcare. I'm not proud that we run secret torture prisons out of Eastern Europe. I'm not proud that American CEOs make 500 times what their employees make, compared with 40 times in Europe.
Flying the flag, along with displaying love for America in its historical or ideal form, displays pride in where America's at right now. I love America, particularly the ideals America was founded on, but I don't think we're living up to those ideals as a country currently.

umm I respect what everyone is saying, and I dont always put extreme amounts of thought into waht Im trying to say, so I just type. I think sam and syk pretty much summed it up.
Also I want to make it clear that I am personally against overt patriotism, no matter where it takes place. I love this country, not as much for the ideals as for the society that it has formed. However I feel extreme nationalistic sentiments in a nation only brews widespread comtempt for other nations. This is only logical since if you are great, there must be something if not terrible atleast great to a lesser extent. Otherwise it is not possible for you to be great in the first place. Therefore by saying your country is great you are indirectly putting down other countries. Pretty much too much patriotism creates a national ego problem. When you have several countries experiencing this at the same time in the same region, you almost always have wars. When one looks back in history it is obvious that almost all wars revolve around one or multiple countries having too big of an 'ego'.
Anyways I kinda just babbled on there but my point is that you should be proud to be a good person IMO, nationalism should come after that.
summary of my ramblings: in a uptopian world there are no countries, and therefore no patriots. or some shit..

i would never not want to fly the flag. But, in times of war when democrats disagree with republicans, republicans fly the flag as if to say, I support the country, I support the war, as if you can only have both. i think most people just didn't like the way you said it.

I think this is very well put.
On the original topic of Fred Phelps and his nasty relatives, I forgot to mention earlier that I've also read that the main reason they make scenes at soldiers funerals and similar stunts, is in hopes of being assaulted so they can sue. I think at one point they had twenty-something lawsuits going. One more reason everyone should just ignore them, and that the biker gang cordon thing Chardrian mentioned is such a good idea.

Interesting, a good statement of your position, and I understood it.
I still think flying the flag should mean only that you love America and that it shouldn’t take on connotations-of-the-moment, though that is not how most see it (obviously).
When 9/11 happened I put a flag in the back window of my car and couldn’t imagine ever taking it down. It is still there today. Very likely anyone who sees it there takes it to mean I support the war and such but all I intend by it is that we have a great nation and we should not take our freedoms so lightly, for most other nations don’t have them.

(I don't actually belive that statement holds water. However it DOES in some cases and in those cases it's glaring and funny. But it doesn't in a lot so whatever.
I seriously believe that if you set up a Null Hypothesis of
H0: There is no statistically significant relationship between guys who tend to find flaws in the opposite sex to gripe about and how much actual sexual attention they receive.
And did gathered information in a statistically sound method, without committing a sampling error. Then you analyzed your findings and applied a .01 Level of Significance you would end up having to "fail to reject the null". In otherwords you would be able to say with 99 per cent accuracy that there is no relationship between guys who tend to find flaws in the opposite sex to gripe about and how much actual sexual attention they receive.
But still. There are definitely the fat guys who sit back and pick apart every pretty damn-decent girl who is no Eva Longoria. But then there are the other guys who pick apart those same girls and actually do get play. But that's just the part that kills what I said at first. And what I said at first is funny in it's truth. But it's "truth" isn't so much a truth a random thing that you notice more when it's the fat guy, because you know he gets no play.
Kind of like you notice bad beats mroe and tend to think that poker is unfair. It's just that statistical probabilites working out like they should does not catch your attention to the same degree that the abnormalities do.
