Anyone installing, already installed? I avoided vista like the plague, but installed the evaluation/beta a couple months ago and am happy with it. Getting 64bit 7 Pro at a student discount for $30 this week to coincide with a new puter. I would think at least some Vista people would be upgrading.
It works fine with HEM, and pokerstars on my 32bit. Anyone running a 64 bit setup?

I have been running different iterations of Win 7 since initial beta. I loaded on the Win 7 64bit Ultimate RTM bits when they were released to MSDN users about a month ago. Previously I ran Vista 64 Enterprise for over a year, I really didn't experience alot of the issues that others did. Most of my issues were related to running 64bit vs. 32bit.
My take on Win 7. It is fairly solid, not perfect though. I have loaded several older printer drivers and such without issue. I have again run into the 64bit issue with a few items, but am just running a couple of different 32bit VMs to run those apps/tools I need. The things that they did much better was the UAC is still there but much better. The networking is much easier to understand and configure for the laymen. The interface is much much cleaner and streamlined. I still havent had the time to really dig into the XP mode stuff yet, but hopefully will in the next 30 days.
I am running HEM with no issues on the 64bit version. If you can put your hands on a license for 30 bucks then I think it would be well worth it. I think they have done some things for usability very well in this release, and under the covers it is very solid.

For people with a school .edu email address
http://lifehacker.com/5361566/get-wi...-email-address
after you get the email and you click to buy, there is an link at the bottom that says "need to connect to school domain" or something like that. If you follow there you can get 7 pro instead of home.
This is a full install that a download link will be provided on the release date.

I've been using the 64bit Win7 (RTM) for probably a couple months now. It's very nice, and I'm coming from XP because vista has always annoyed the fuck out of me.
You do still get UAC prompts, but not as many, that's the only thing that's bugged me at all so far.

Been using various incarnations of Win7 Ultimate for quite a while now (from first beta all the way to gold master), and I have to say that the most recent version, that is the one that is coming out on the 22nd (which has been around for about a month now), is the most stable windows I have ever used, so yes, its essentially what Vista should have been, goddamn marketing people.
Edit: Might be useful to some

Does it make any sense for me to buy and install this?
I'm running XP SP3 on an Intel Celeron CPU 2.4 GHz w/1GB of RAM (maxed out) and a 40GB hard drive (Compaq Presario S4000NX box). I consider myself lucky to have completely skipped Vista and my computer is pretty darn stable these days, so would i just be opening a can of worms that doesn't need opening?
I probably plan to buy a new box within the next a year or so anyway.

I would wait until you get a new box.
My old desktop is a 2.4Ghz Pentium 4 with 1.5GB RAM and it didn't run great (somewhat related to the video card too). Plus the installation takes 10GB. I installed it to check it out, liked it which expedited getting a new computer which I needed anyway.

If your PC is anything close to five years old then definitely wait.
I get it free through MSDN/work and I'm still going to wait until I sort a new PC out. A big part of me wants to get a mac though so I'll have to wait and see. Or buy both.
