I've been troubled with a problem for a couple months now. Whenever I wash dishes in my dishwasher, a white film coats all the pots, pans, and glasses. It's most visible on metal/black pots, as seen in these pictures below:
I can scrub and scrub and scrub but the film won't come off. It actually used to be worse, but we recently started doing all dishes by hand... slowly it is starting to fade. We've tried switching detergents and rinse aide, to no avail.
I don't want to do dishes by hand anymore... help.

I've read up on this, I've heard it's caused by hard water. I've read some other causes, but I can't seem to find a solution anywhere. Has anyone else gone through this and got rid of the problem?

first, try some test runs
put a couple bowls in the dishwasher and run it through the cycle without detergent. this will tell you if it's a problem with the water, if it is, you can try this:
dishwasherfilter.com
if it turns out that your water is fine and it's a problem with the detergent, you could try this:
use less detergent, maybe you are using too much.
or:

are you using liquid or powder dishwasher detergent? At our old apt. we used powder and that + the hard water would leave a film, not quite that bad though.

There are a lot of water-softening options that involved placing an actual water-softener aparatus where the water comes into the house, and filling it with chemical salt every few months.
|

you could try putting vinegar in your dishwasher too, this will get rid of the scale inside the dishwasher. Also you can put it in with your dishes while running it.
