No not binary. I started a new job last week and the secretary was talking to me about taxes. She said "would you rather have 1 or 0?" I just looked at her like "huh?" She said 0 was better so I said "ok than 0." I wasn't too woried about it. But I have no idea what it meant or if it was even better. So I know a lot of people here don't have jobs but someone should know.

It's the number of dependants you are claiming. 0 means you are not claiming yourself, 1 means you are claiming yourself.
More money is taken out in taxes with "1" which means bigger return but a smaller weekly check. At the end of the year (after you file in Jan, I mean Aug 15th) you pay the same amount regardless of 0 or 1.

Swiggidy is sort of correct. It does have to do with the amount taken out, but if you put 0, then more taxes are taken out every week. If you put 1, then less taxes would be taken out.
