nice, ive watched a few vids on sda before. i'll definitely tune in because it's for a good cause.

that somebody can beat faxanadu in 40 minutes is just crazy. i remember watching when it was like an hour about a year ago and it looked flawless. that game took me ages to beat.

Super Metroid Speedruns are crazy. But I Think they need to start adding caveats into the Metroid Runs. Like "only collect the items you HAVE to" speed runs, or 100% speed runs. These "pick and choose" runs are silly
The older I get, the more I start wondering; Just what in the hell is going on here?

Naw they have those dude. Things like

- Any % with cheats
- Any % without cheats
- Suitless
- 100%
- Single segment or segmented
- TAS or console
- Whole bunch of other nichey stuff or MODs

Pretty much everything has been done with Super Metroid. Speeddemosarchive and TASvideos websites will have all the best.

Yeah I don't know how some of these ppl beat games that fast. You have to run good/play good I suppose.

Games from that era are almost all 0 luck because every time you entered the level all of the "bad guys" would always have the same pathing/start in the same place, so it becomes a muscle memory thing.

That is actually not true. There is lots of randomness in NES games. Most games will have 2-3 patterns some of which are better than others in certain places throughout the game. For instance in Double Dragon II the game I ran there are ~10 different places where randomness can cost you time if you get the wrong patterns so running good is helpful.

Luck manipulation is essential in most speed runs

Take turn-based RPG for example. Lots of RNG going on in battle generation and sequencing, NPC movements, etc

Maybe the biggest I've seen is Shining Force, where every strike is critical or double, and the enemies hardly ever attack

You can still play it now for free if you download a SNES emulator and the Super Metroid rom file. Oh and having a controller you can hook up to your computer helps too unless you have some sick keyboard skills.

should probably mention that theres a difference between tool assisted and non-tool assisted. when people find out the difference, many of them decide that tool assisted is talentless, but thats because theyre stupid

if you want to watch super metroid runs without save states and slow mo, youtube red scarlet or hotarubi or just find them on sda

Hotarubi is the human TAS so ppl might not be able to tell the difference

Yeah i was about to mention this.

It's not talentless, but is far less impressive you have to admit. They are playing the game like 3 seconds at a time for multiple trials per so as to achieve perfection. Its more of a logistics exercise than anything else.

I prefer watching SDA where they are all non tas, non glitch, non emulator.

That's true. Would like to point out though that the logistics is one place where talent really does come in. Just like with SDA videos, TAS videos are continually improved upon. This may not be because of finger dexterity and hand/eye coordination, but the talent at recognizing all the logistics involved in shaving off a fraction of a second here and a fraction of a second there is legitimate. I've seen every Super Metroid TAS I can get my hands on, and I'm honestly stunned every time I see a new run improve upon or completely revamp what I thought looked perfect before

Also, those who make sick TAS are probably similarly skilled at the game as those who make console runs. At least I would assume so because they probably spend similar amounts of time with controller in hand attempting to best technique. I've never done TAS so I couldn't say how that works exactly though

Some TASers can play very well on console but I think its a small minority. I know Cpadolf said he got some 35:00ish times in Super Metroid on the console and his TASes set the standard for that game. Hotarubi is clearly a sick joke on the console but he has done a few TAS's as well.

As for how TAS works, it basically allows you to slow the game down to frame by frame speed while having the ability to save whenever you want and redo things as many times as you want. It also allows for some things that just would not be possible on console such as holding two directions on a controller at the same time (left/right) which are of great benefit in a run and manipulating the RNG. Sorry if this is a poor explanation but I am no TAS expert and I am getting kinda drunk for 2010.

Currently Donkey Kong Country 1,2 & 3.

Coming up after that some really good stuff:

Mike Tyson's Punch-out!!
Super Mario Bros. 1 & 2,
Super Mario Bros. 3 race: Frezy Man vs Andrewg (who are both the nuts at that game).

http://speeddemosarchive.com/

Super Metroid will be tomorrow afternoon I know folks had some interest in that game.
