Everything in this game costs real money. Its just like using a foreign currency. So for your character to eat, have a hous etc. it cost money. So by owning some land he can charge people to hunt, mine or anything else they can think of.
According to thier web site they assume that instead of paying however much people pay to Sony or Blizzard a month to play EQ or WoW people will be happy to spend the real money in game and the "entrepreneurs" in the game will find ways to make money from the plebs who read news storys like the one above and think that this is an easy way to make money.

I agree with you.. I don't think most people realize that this guy has probably put thousands (yes, THOUSANDS) of hours of play into this game. I've never played this game.. infact I don't even remember what it was called. I used to play FFXI though, and it is a HUGE timesink to say the least. It's bad to get hooked on a MMORPG.
