Seems like it'd be advantageous as a poker player / college student / job etc etc. Wondered if anyone had ever tried it. Sounds pretty nutty.

It's called sleep deprivation

There are a host of reasons we sleep the way we do. Try polyphasic sleep for long enough, and you'll find your shit is fucked

Relevant, haven't tried it to comment on myself. Clearly doesn't mesh well while working for the man.

nice link ty.

That is actually very popular in lots of europe for days off (esp if you have an evening planned). And places like Italy where 12-3pm is too hot to really do anything useful outside other than burn.

Yea I'm not sure sleeping 2 or 3 hours a day longterm would be very good for you. I'm also sure I'd fail because I oversleep while trying to sleep 8 all the time.

In other news, my brother sometimes goes for days with little sleep and uses a sort of polyphasic approach periodically. He boasts that he does great with less sleep and makes up all these reasons why like his new supplement or his positive attitude or whatever

But then he fails to mention that after about a week he ends up crashing and sleeps for like fourteen hours straight

Pretty interesting. I had a friend who decided to just go to sleep whenever he felt sleepy, regardless of the time of day. Apparently he felt better than he ever had before despite having a totally fucked up sleep schedule. 3pm? Yep bed time
[00:29] <daven> dc, why not check turn behind
[00:30] <DC> daven
[00:30] <DC> on my hand?
[00:30] <daven> yep
[00:30] <DC> because I am drunk
[00:30] <daven> nice reason
[00:30] <daven> no further questions
[00:30] <yaawn> ^^Lol

Problem officer...?

Seems reasonable once you're REM sleep begins and ends with you closing and opening your eyes. But I don't think I'd attempt this without consulting with a doctor first. I'd probably want to kill myself the first 2 weeks and just being up for 30 hours about kills me. And it takes me more than 20 minutes just to get out of bed.

I found out about this ages ago, wanted to give it a try it but it would never fit in with my work / lifestyle (and also others)

Since then I came across this acticle:
Polyphasic Sleep: Facts and Myths
And I'd recommend anyone thinking about it to read, there's a link to a follow up article at the top too.

There's a sleep clinic not far from where I live, I might contact them see what they have to say about it, but it seems just about impossible (lots of stories of historical figures who did it, but if true they are most likely freaks of nature who didn't need the sleep anyway, or had too much awesome stuff to do to bother with sleeping)

Bear in mind being that when sleep deprived, your brain behaves very similarly to when you are drunk, so even if it does work, that's still two weeks of no driving / playing sports / studying / DIY etc during the "adjustment period". If it doesn't work you've just wasted two + weeks (and people waste much longer trying to adjust before just giving up)

The reason I was interested was because if I'm feeling just a little bit tired I can, if I want to, fall asleep at the drop of a hat, any time and just about anywhere, and ill wake up in 10 - 15 minutes without alarms and feeling completely rested but totally wide awake the moment I wake up. I do this just about everyday after work, unless I'm really busy or something, but I feel like doing it much more often (I would right now if I wasn't at work but I just ahve to go thru the rest of the day feeling tired till I get home, and i got a solid 8 hours sleep last night)

I've done this in my van parked on the side of the motorway with lorries thundering by, and also in a really busy pub (have to be careful cus the bouncers throw you out if they see you sleeping lol) too, where I was just too tired to be working / enjoying myself.

This sounded very similar to what the polyphasic sleepers do, or attempt to do, so I thought I might have a better time "adapting".

DoGGZ (it_depends) tried this on a few different occasions if I remember correctly. I do not believe he was ever successful in doing it for any extended period of time.

A week ago I had a dinner event for 20 on monday (weee starting my own small business!) and I had work friday and saturday. Having sunday off I scheduled a lot of the prep for sunday. The previous sunday I was drunk and I guess I agreed to cover this guys shift.. by the time he reminded me it was too late and I had to work. I ended up getting about 5 or 6 hours of sleep in 72 hours. When the dinner was finally over I drove some people home, then headed home myself. The hallucinations were mild when other people were in the car, but when I was alone I started to have pretty intense depth of perception hallucinations. Objects would suddenly appear very very close, then very far, then in the middle ground. I cannot be 100% sure, but I believe I fell asleep a few times, or at least had my eyes closed for an extended period of time while driving. Scary shit..

So ya, if you're gonna try this, don't plan on driving during the adjustment period.

^This

I think if there was a better way to sleep we wouldn't have been doing the same thing for thousands of years of recorded history.

I only need 6 hours to function fully all day long. If you can't fit 6 hours of sleep into your day then you need to reassess and change what you do in the rest of your life, not your sleep schedule.

If I'm radically altering my sleep schedule I'm in combat or some sort of other life or death situation and I suppose I'll do it when I have a child. Other than that...meh, the world will be there tomorrow.

I did it for like 3 weeks on multiple occasions. The first time I did it was the month that I played the most poker of my life. It could be really useful for the right person.

The problem is that I genuinely like sleep. With polyphasic sleep, it's as if you never get a real chance to rest. You may not be tired, but you just want a mental break. This led to all of my polyphasic relaps and failures.

oh, and sup
