So I have been having trouble sleeping. I just lay in bed tossing and turning while my brain runs on and on about different scenarios and how they can play out. Anyways, any suggestions would be appreciated on helping me deal with this.

Turn off distractions, put some drops of Valerian into a glass of water (WARNING: It tastes like shit and smells like a base substance), and relax.

i have struggled with this kind of insomnia quite a bit. fortunately the problem isnt a medical one as much as a behavioral one

- dont sleep in. this is the biggest problem. when you sleep in regularly you put your body on like 26-27 hour days

- exercise. the more the better.

- get up when the sun wakes you up

I too have problems with this.

- use your bed for only sleeping and sex (no watching TV or on the computer)
- eliminate substances such as alcohol and smoking devices
- go to bed at the same time everyday

Regular exercise helps a shitton. It's one of the biggest factors imo.

Try to have some wind down time between poker/tv/interneting and sleep. The bright lights of screens fucks with our body's natural way of putting us to sleep when the sun goes down.

When I realize my brain is working overtime and my mind is racing. I'll try to re-direct my focus so that I'm thinking about things that I know will put me to sleep.

Best advice I've ever heard was in a Patrick McManus book, and while he managed to turn it into a rather humorous situation. He has a farm that, while he's lying in bed, he imagines he's doing work on the farm. That put's me to sleep in a heartbeat. Another one that psychologists suggest a lot, is that you imagine your bed is a cloud that your mind can move, and you wrap yourself up in the cloud pulling your blankets (parts of the cloud) around you, imagine where the could goes, do this until you get bored and stop thinking. If you find your mind racing again, jump right back in to the last thing you remember b4 your mind started racing again.

Be careful taking melatonin, it can cause your body to produce less, meaning you'll become dependant on it. Some people have lost the entire ability to produce melatonin due to dependancy on the drug. Scary shit. They go through bouts where they can't sleep for several days at a time.

One story in particular ended with a woman who didn't sleep for something like 6 months before it finally killed her. She lost all use of motor functions after like 2 weeks.
The older I get, the more I start wondering; Just what in the hell is going on here?

Don't believe the melatonin hype

You can find anecdote attesting to anything, and I'm moderately confident (not bothering to look it up again) that the peer-reviewed research doesn't show anything remotely close to those kind of effects.

I've personally consumed way more in larger varieties and quantities than anybody you'll ever meet, yet it has done nothing seemingly deleterious

A rule of thumb: if popular publications say a lot of something, they're probably wrong. Also, if melatonin really were that powerful, look to it being prescription, illegal, etc.

Personal Anecodotal evidence aside, you make a valid point. That having been said, there are plenty of things out there that society probably shouldn't have access too that aren't illegal under the argument that it's our own personal choice to use them.

I'm just saying, I've read the case of that poor woman, and while it's a very slim chance (only 3 cases documented historically) all 3 were related to melatonin production, and the substitution thereof. Just be careful, and if you feel yourself going off kilter when using it, man up and don't use it. If it doesn't affect you... keep on trucking.

I dl'd a few tracks off youtube and made a playlist of rain fall that i listen to on my iPod... it's been one of the best things for me getting to sleep, despite the distraction of the earbuds and such.

Major fail.

I have found socks increase my feeling of warmth and comfort.

Making me sleep better.

But alcohol and sex usually have the same effect, they just aren't as reasonable.

When I had mild insomnia I found it helpful to quit trying to sleep - just lie there, chill, if you happen to sleep so be it, if you don't, who cares..

How long is it taking you to get off to sleep?

Also I find this awesome, not just for quality of sleep but for general calmness the next day:

Because socks will get his brain to stop? OP didn't say he was cold and uncomfortable.

Besides, he's Asian. He probably wears slippers, not socks.

Now I can't sleep cause I have to piss.

I used to have no problem falling asleep.
I had sleep apnea where you can't stay asleep and had surgery for it. Before surgery I was waking up 40 times/hour although I didn't realize it as I immediately fell alseep again. After surgery it was 8 times/hour. Now I have trouble falling asleep.

It takes me anywhere from 45 minutes to 2 hours to fall asleep no matter how tired I am. I've tried reading, not reading, watching tv, not watching tv, trying not to go to sleep, every sleep aid available, etc.

Now I just live with it. I do not go to bed until I get sleepy. If I get sleepy at 3 am, that's when I go to bed.
