    Default Torn Calf Muscle Advice?

So last night I'm playing football with one of my 11-year-old sons. I'm trying not to get tackled... walking backwards on the sidewalk, and step off the curb onto the street when I wasn't expecting to... POP!

It sounded like someone popping their knuckles but inside my leg. Immediate pain in the calf area, up to the back of my knee. Walking is only possible with a horrible limp if I don't push off on my toes. The doctor is going to make a house call this afternoon, any advice on how to treat this other than staying off of it? Any idea on how long it will take to be able to walk normally? Right now getting up at all is a major chore.

Ouch, sorry to hear that. Harsh.

You should probably seek out a physiotherapist, rather than a doctor.

Thanks, Ong. That's a good idea, as I want to get whatever it is properly diagnosed although the symptoms fall right in line with a torn calf muscle.

I definitely see more requests for legal advice than medical advice on forums, but I think the same advice applies.

    Get well soon.

Well I would think the phsyiotherapist will make a more accurate diagnosis in terms of severity, and will be able to better advise a recovery regime.

On the plus side, this could be a good time to get a high volume of poker in. So long as you're not spazzed out on painkillers, anyway.

so you think he should be seeing a lawyer to sue for getting his medical fees seen to as a result of a dangerous kerb?

    Well-played.

Well, a friend of a friend happened to know a "physio-therapist" who was nice enough to drop by and diagnose it as a torn calf muscle.

His advice was exactly what is posted in the document Renton linked to (just the squat exercises starting in a few days without the weight since the only athletic activity I do is a lot of walking). Got a couple of prescriptions filled and I'm good to go. Thanks everyone for the advice.

If you don't show an invitation you were given to this thread then I'm going to have to ask you to leave.

My advice about torn calf muscles is to try to avoid them happening. I have no advice if you don't follow my aforementioned advice except not to do it again.

Haha my 11-year-old said the same thing. "Watch where you step, Dad!"

You don't have to tear a calf muscle to bond with your 11 year old. Sounds like video games would have been a lot safer in this situation.
It takes 2 years to learn to talk, but a lifetime to learn when to shut up.
