In theory he's right, and that's what self-defense training for women is supposed to do: teach em' how to deliver a sweet kick to the nuts when they have to. But to develop those kind of instincts to overcome the paralysing fear that usually happens in the heat of the moment takes more time than most people are willing to put in.

Management position opens up... bid for it. Only competition is another supervisor who has no management training... he has only supervised for 2 years.
Decision is made... and I don't get the management position. Reason? It was a tough decision that was very close... and no other reason is given.

This happened to me once. New guy with no experience got it over me for no reason other than "it was close". Within a few months though, I realized that they made the right call. He was actually a pretty decent manager and I came to realize it was a role that I didn't really want. I was just after the pay raise.
