I have to share this story cause it just made me laugh. Monday night I'm watching the Mav's/Rockets game on NBA tv - So you get the local announcers (usually pretty cool). Well, they kept calling Josh Howard "Jay HO" - I happen to think if you don't have a good nickname for someone, just don't give them one. Telling my buddy at work this and he says they call Manny Ramirez "Man Ram" - I laughed for about an hour today at work - sometimes it's okay to NOT give people nicknames! Just made my day though - hilarious
MAN RAM is manny's nickname on wikipedia - how did that name stick???

I could be wrong, but I think Jim Rome perpetuated the Man Ram thing.

I think nicknames are appropriate for athletes with names that are difficult to pronounce or if it accurately describes someone. For instance Big Ben or AK47 for Ben Roethlisberger and Andrei Kirilenko respectively are fine (though nobody has much trouble with Ben's name anymore these days). Willie Mays as the Say Hey Kid and "Neon" Deion Sanders are fitting.

Some nicknames are stupid and pointless though. I hate that people refer to Terrel Owenss as TO, or (not an athlete, but still a good example) Jeniffer Lopez as J-Lo. Those are unnecessary and bland. They serve no practical purpose.

Also, if I ever see anyone in person actually mention a celebrity couple hybrid nickname such as Bennifer or Tomkat I just might have to punch them in the cunt.

I have no interest in discussing strategy with a protege'. Your job is to remain quiet and listen. I have a very systematic approach that I will share with the right candidate and I promise that I will turn you into a force of nature and show you elements of the game of poker that you never knew existed.

Laurence Maroney should be nicknamed Lo-Mo.

Smithers, use the amnesia ray.
You mean the revolver, sir?

here is the one i heard today - Apparently Tim Carver kept calling Travis Haffner "Pronk" during the ALCS - Thinking it was a clever nickname or something.....Well apparently he earned this nickname in the showers because he's "part donkey" and hung like one....so I guess all the cleveland fans got a pretty good laugh cause of Carver being an idiot and kept calling him Pronk everytime he came up to bat - lol

and yeah, i still laugh about the Man Ram thing - It's pretty funny.....
