I live in Ireland but market is similiar to UK as far as i know.
Cars im looking at are mainly saloons since im a big guy so i think a nice big enough cars are; (most cars are about same price and im looking for cars no older than 2006)
Audi A4
Skoda Octavia (5k cheaper than all others)
Ford Mondeo
VW Passat
Volvo s40
Mostly im looking at def nothing bigger than 1.9ltr and i think 1.6lt is probably a more realisitic size id get.
Any thoughts?? id be interested in other types of cars u recommend or other types besides saloons if they are roomy.

The Audi came top of Which? Magazins best cars (my bro in-law works for Which and my Dad recently bought one on his advice), so that'd be my choice. Really nice car, looks good as well and holds its value pretty well.
Whatever you do don't buy a Renualt - i've had no end of probs with my mine. French bastards!!!

The Skoda is a pretty good deal for its price. Not the most beatiful car, but for the most part it´s a mix of VW Golf and Passat, just dressed a bit less sportive. IIRC it comes with all extras still cheaper than the others. The 1.6 is a bit slow, I´d go with the 1.9 TDI engine.
The Mondeo is also pretty cool, I´ve had the 1.9 diesel from 2002 and didnt have any problems with it.

I used to be a large saloon, 2ltr guy but my 1.4 MkV VW Golf is amazing and easily the best I've had. It's also bloody roomy with a very generous boot. Chuck in tank like build quality/reliability and the best value retention in its class and you can't go wrong.
