When you make a change to your project you commit ("save a copy of" let's say) your project files in some folder/on some server. This place where the copy is stored is called your repository. Then when you make another change you commit the project again. Now you have two slightly different copies of your project in your repository, and so on and so forth.

So eventually in your repository you've got a bunch of copies of your project at different stages of its life, meaning when you realize that you spent the last two hours (or two weeks) fucking everything up, you don't have to spend two hours undoing your work but instead you can just grab the copy of your project that you committed/saved before you spent two hours (or two weeks) fucking everything up.

It's basically a time machine and is indeed your friend.
