Well I have recently decided to stop smoking cold turkey. I smoked a pack a day. So far I have made it 62 hours and 27 minutes. Maybe more by the end of this thread. Anyone have any tips or anything to help? Right now, I'd carve out someones heart with a plastic spoon/spork for a cigarette. Obviously this is -EV. Any suggestions?

i)don´t go out and don´t drink for the next 10 weeks.
ii)have a lot of sex
iii)smoking weezy to compensate is bad
iv)a smoking girl friend will destroy your ambitions (conflicts with ii))
v)don´t even dare to smoke "just a single one" b/c it´s friday or something.
i resisted about half a year, now i´m back in smokey business.
Good luck

I've never smoked a cigg before, but I've chewed for the last ten or eleven years of my life. I've quit twice, once for a year and a half and another for a year. All of the above advice is *great*. Especially the part about not letting yourself "just have one," that's how I got back on it this third time. It started out as "ehh, I'll just have a chew every Tuesday at my home poker game." Then it was "ehh, what's two on a Tuesday going to hurt." Then I had my own can but just chewed on Tuesdays, then somehow I got back to one a day, etc, etc....
Good luck man. You can do it.
Also, get patches or go to your doctor. My dad smoked for 30+ years and quit cold turkey because they gave him some badass drug that made him absolutely not crave it....and made him somewhat sick-feeling if he did smoke.

BTW, now that you've started this thread, please keep us updated. I want to high five you as the hours/days/weeks go by.
And if you slip...well, lets just say bad things will happen to you, gnomes. Very. Bad. Things.
Again, good luck.
P.S. Also, check out the link(s) that have been (or will be) provided, as well as the books people have, or will, suggest. When I really, truly wanted to stop chewing those things helped me out greatly.

The main reason I quitting smoking is to return to the ring. I havent fought since 2001. The last 6 months I have REALLY wanted fight again. I lost that desire a long time ago. I am horribly out of shape, compared to what I once was. I've been training again for about 2 weeks. I don't plan on even sparring until I have my weight down to 200lbs or so. This is also the main reason I chose not to use any books/gum/patches. If I dont have enough self control to stop doing something that will give me cancer and a shorten lifespan then I could never have the will to fight competitively again. Thanks everyone for the support.

Exercising helps a lot. You feel even one cigarette the next day. Running had a lot to do with me quitting.

I'm not going to say good luck because luck has nothing to do with this. If you want it badly enough, you'll make it happen. It sounds like you're really motivated to quit and I think you are going to be successful.

FWIW Xianti, i could never quit while i was still smoking the dope. smoking a cig after a bowl takes you to that next level, so when i quit that, it was much easier to drop ciggarettes.

substitute the fighting for soccer/rugby and im in exactly the same position apart from i need to give up eating all the time
Gl with giving up, my mom just started after smoking for 20years and she says its really hard but after a week or two it becomes much easier if you have other things to keep you occupied.

Well, I blew one down yesterday and it didnt bother me. I seriously doubt I'd give up the ganja unless I had to take a piss test if I ever decided to take a real job.

Progress??
I've been solid for about a month, with only 2 minor lapses (both drinking).
Best feeling was the 5 mile bike ride - felt great not losing my breath at all.

allan carrs book in a sentance :
fags are a trick, each one only makes you want the next one
When i gave up smoking to box again (just as excersise and to spar with freinds) the mental strength it took to stop was far far greater than any i ever experienced training or fighting. I still occasionaly puff some green if doing some weights or a long cycle ride, but no longer with tobacco.
good luck!

I "quit" smoking a little after new years. I have not completely quit but I do not smoke regularly at all anymore. I never really fiend for cigarettes, but when I am drunk I will usually smoke one or two a nite. I now wake up with a nasty ass taste in my mouth even after just smoking one cig. I used to consume a pack a nite and not even notice the taste. Mainly the only reason that I actually ever smoke at parties is for a conversation breaker with that bombshell across the room.
A big thing that helped for me was every time I felt like I wanted a cig I would go for a run. This helped me a lot because if I did relapse running would be hell the next day.
