Anyone live there or done any traveling there?
I'm planning a trip with my gf for February. Thinking about flying into Cape Town, renting a 4x4 camper and touring the west coast, vineyards, beaches, national parks and head up into Namibia and then back over about two weeks...
Any thoughts or advice appreciated.

Will do. I have a friend who did a very similar trip, so I have some good info to work with. I'll write a trip report when I get back, or we can hop on AIM or something.

I studied there for a year when I was in college and loved it. But that was like a lifetime ago for most of you guys (10 years ago).
It's a beautiful country but it's also sort of a weird one in that it has the characteristics of both a leading country (great universities, hospitals, access to technology, etc.) and a "developing" country (high crime rate, high AIDS rate, etc.) plus the fact that it is still having to deal with the ramifications involved in dismantling the apartheid regime which only ended like 15 years ago.

It's a great 3rd world country with racist people (both blacks & whites) & a high crime rate. Public transport is pretty much non-existant so renting a car is an excellent idea. Remember that we drive on the left instead of the right hand side.
If it weren't for the crime rate I'd recommend it but if you're definitely coming down, you're probably gonna love it.

Thanks metalface. Pretty sure we're coming, but we haven't bought our tickets yet. I've heard that crime in Johannesburg is worse than in other areas. True?
We'll probably stick to the western part of the country, will we have to worry about having our car stolen, or stuff stolen out of it? Or worse?

Crime in Johannesburg is definately higher than in other parts of the country. Cape Town is a lovely city and I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to pay us a visit.

Crime in the Cape is not nearly as high as in Joburg area, especially serious crimes. London is more dangerous than Cape Town IMO, just depends to which areas you go I guess.

Woah this sounds cool:
"The close sister of abseiling, rapp jumping is a relatively new sport in South Africa. With a specialized rope attached to your back, you literally run down the sides of buildings and mountain rock faces - clearly a thrill sport not for the fainthearted. "
