I didn't get to go at all last winter so I started early this season.
Boreal(near Lake Tahoe) has season passes for $199 with certain restrictions (can't be used on Saturdays etc). I went up there to start the season off today. The drive was less than 90 minutes which was nice. No need for 4 wheel drive until entering the parking lot(I parked over a sheet of ice). Getting the pass was easy, the counter is indoors and there were no lines.
Snowboarding is kind of like riding a bike in that it comes back to you quickly. All I needed was one run to get back into the swing of things. One advantage of going solo is that you get way more runs in. By lunch time I had already done about half a dozen solid runs.
After lunch it started snowing lightly. Many people like to board the day after it snows but I like to be out there while it is coming down. Don't get me wrong, if it is snowing hard and you can't see then I call it a day. However, a light snow is ideal because it keeps the crowds away and it guarantees there is some soft powder. After about 10 more runs I called it a day.
Hopefully Boreal will open the rest of the lifts soon, I'd love to get back up there when they do. I topped the day off with a nice soak in the jacuzzi so I'm feeling pretty good right now.

nice man, I went for my first time just last year. Ive skateboarded on an off all my life pretty much. So snowboarding comes fairly naturally to me. I did get a concussion and had some other hard spills learning to keep off my leading edge. I also went surfing for the first time last year. Anyways I think we are gonna roll deep this year, like 10 -15 of us. Sadly we are going to wisconsin, since I live in illinois. Ive never been on a real mountain to snowboard, but the hills they have here are not all that bad. There are probably half a dozen places with half pipes, and about that many places have hotels right on the hills. So its not tellyride(sp?) but it gets the job done.
Who knows, maybe next year, or late this season Ill make it out to the east coast where my friend goes to college, and hit a real mountain...

On Friday I am leaving for Breckenridge, Colorado, from Kansas City. I will ski (haven't learned to snowboard yet) Saturday through Tuesday.
My fiance has a good friend from college that has parents that own a condo out there. The condo is huge, there will be over twenty people sleeping there. The best thing about it? It's a "ski-in/ski-out" condo. You literally ski 30yrds from the back door of the condo to the mountain, then 75yrds down the mountain....and you're at the base freaking lift.
It is going to be sweet.

I started out skiing and dont get to go all that often, so everytime I've thought about trying to snowboard, I end up skiing again in effort to not spend a couple days on my ass.
I went skiing with the family in Breckinridge last christmas. Beautiful place, we stayed about 2 blocks away in some condos so it was a little walk but still awesome, probably one of my favorite resorts to ski, especially with the wide selection of runs on all parts of the slope made it not too painful to stay with the rest of the family.
Now have a planned road trip with a group of friend to Steamboat on the 4th to go along with www.themusicfest.com

I've had some nasty spills too which is why I wear a helmet and wrist guards.

does anyone have a recomendation on buying a board, and or any other gear. Im not currently looking to buy a board but I figure while the topic is hot I hsould ask. However I think I am gonna buy a helmet of my own this season, so if anyone has a recomendation for that I would apprecaite it.
I rode a barton rental when I went last year, it was really nice I thought, but I dont know much. I have heard barton is a top notch company so I think Ill stick with them when buying a board, but Id like to hear waht you guys ride/ recommend.

I'm goin to whistler for spring break. This will be in stark contrast to my local 300ft tall hill, and the biggest thing i've ever rode was 500ft. So pathetic but what am I supposed to do in Michigan? $416 for a season pass and that was the reduced rate.

Burton makes great equipment. It is expensive but worth it in the long run because it is more durable than the bargain brands.
My board, bindings, boots, pants and jacket are all Burton. My helmet is Pro-Tec.

ok good to hear, pro-tec is the brand I bought when I skateboarded, and I was young enough to have to listen to my mom and wear a helmet... heh.
Do you recommend the straps, or the clips for the bindings? The rental stuff had those clips, and I really liked that, however I see on tv and in videos that pros always seem to have the straps. Are they better for some reason? does it change the feeling?

Yeah I'm considering getting a burton too..I'd have to either go to some other town to get it or buy it via the internet though

Eric.. what is your opinion on Rossinggol? Just wondering.. I'm pretty new to snowboarding but I have a Rossinggol board with Burton boots and bindings. It's a pretty decent setup.. I dropped about $600 on all of it at BMBW's openhouse.
Also, what do you think of spyder? I bought a spyder coat and snow pants.. they seem to be decent but I havn't really tested them out in the cold. I'm more concerned about quality/durability then getting the cool snowboarding brands.
Other then that.. I'm ready to go. Got some underarmour, oakley wisdom goggles, nice gloves, etc.
BMBW opens 3:30 pm est tomorrow (friday).. so once I get up I'll probably eat and head up there.

I have the step in bindings and I've been told that they don't make them anymore. Everyone seems to be buying the straps now. The boarders with straps take longer than me to get going after exiting the lift but I'm sure there is a good reason why everyone uses them now.

Along with K2 and Solomon, Rossignol has been around in the skiing community for a long time. I was a skiier before I started boarding and I'm pretty sure that one of my early pairs of skiis was Rossignol.
As for spyder, I think that is the same company that makes cool t shirts and hats that are sold at the Hermosa Beach Pier. I don't know how their stuff holds up in the cold but it is definitely stylish.

I see.. thanks for the feedback.
One more thing, I went boarding today for a couple hours.. and considering I only did it for 1 year (and that was 3 years ago), I was doing pretty decent. My boots are a little big though.. I wear a size 12-13 (US) shoe and I have a size 14 boot. I'm thinking of just getting a new pair of 13's or so.
Anyway, where can I find the best snowboarding boots available? I know that's probably a tough question, but I'm looking for quality, comfort, durability, etc. more then price. I figure if you are boarding around for several hours at least your feet should be warm and comfortable.. thanks again.

Man that sucks, I really liked the step in clips. At the top and bottom of hte hill it seems to save you a lot of time. But like you said, theres probably a good reason.

I'm not sure which place has the best boots but there are tons of stores that carry Burton boots and they are great quality.
Here in California Sports Chalet has good equipment, I just bought my son some goggles from them recently. Today I hit the slopes with my son, it was a blast.

Yes, it was a great day. He had never been boarding before but he did really well. I only had to give him tips once in awhile, he was able to learn a lot on his own. On the last run of the day he only fell a few times.

Today is a good day, we're having friends over and they are all bringing the kids. The kids aren't quite old enough to use our pool table or the table tennis top but it is only a matter of time.
As for boarding, I went for the 6th time this season on Thursday(by myself). From now on when I go with my son I'll use it as an opportunity to practice riding switch. I need to get better at riding goofy foot.

hi guys.
Living in the mountains is fun, but i m missing poker... i m actually turning into a pretty awesome skier though. we need half a meter of snow before they open a link to the rest of the terrain. everyone is kind of bored here at the moment theres not a lot of skiing as it stands. oh and there is nothing else to do here.
i want to come back and make some 'proper' money playing poker. actually, no i want to move to a better resort where i can do both. I NEED POKER
