Im 19, and have never smoked anything. I hang out with people who do it every now and then, and once in a while when we drink they try to get me to toke it up with them, but I just don't. FWIW its not because its illegal, I have never smoked anything. If I did choose to smoke something it probably would be weed over cigarettes because those things are gross as hell.
Who here all smokes on a regular basis? Or just once in a while? What made you start? Why do it?
I like discussions.

My friends are all big time smokers but I don't do the stuff it just makes them lazy and gets in the way of social life at times in my view. That said, they are just as good of friends to me now as when they were sober so it doesn't bother me. The few times I've tried it, I didn't think it was anything too special.
And yeah don't do it when drunk lol they got me like they try to get you and it was aaaaall over for me that night.

I've never touched a drug or cigarette in my life. It's not for like religous or wimpy reasons, I just never felt like it. What's even weirder is my "crowds" over the years have been the chronic pot smokers, and heavy coke crowd but it still never appealed.

I used to smoke a gang of dank all through high school but haven't touched the stuff since I have been in college. I guess it kind of just got old after a while. Whats even more ironic is I go to the school rolling stone named as the number 1 stoned campus in the US. For a while I was into some other drugs, I have pretty much done everything except PCP, and meth.
I'm over it now though and very very rarely use anything. If I do it will be for a real special event when a lot of my buddies are doing it.
For what got me into weed....I would have to say curiosity. When I was younger I always tried to fit in with the cool older guys and I always liked to pretend like I was older. It was inevitable that I would wind up smoking the stuff. Once I did it, I think the rush of doing something I wasn't supposed to was what I enjoyed the most out of it.

This summer i smoked a lot, it's really really fun and there's really nothing wrong with it. The problem is it makes you really lazy and unmotivated. I quit now that im in school, but if someone is smoking and invites me there is no way im passing it up. If you want to get good grades i wouldnt smoke on a regular basis but if your just doing it like once every 2 weeks or something than christ hit that shit!

Supposedly smoking pot is way less bad for you than drinking is.

I know one or two 40+ year old chronics who are basically burnt out losers. They think they're 'creative', but the fact is all they do is spout a constant stream of wacky ideas and never follow through on any of them. One of them is a self-professed writer but he never finishes anything. Another actually has a pretty good job repairing aircraft engines, but when you try to hold a conversation with him it becomes pretty obvious that he's not quite all there.

herb. Don't smoke nearly as much as I did in college or the years after, but I still enjoy it almost every week. Great before a concert or for just sitting at home listening to music or bullshitting with friends.
Not for everyone... makes some people super lazy and others super paranoid. Very little harm in trying it though, imo.

I'm pretty much the same as Gabe here. I will chip in if people around are buying, but I've never gone to a dealer because I could end up going again and again. I'd recommend smoking it if you're curious, it hasn't ever done me any harm.
You're right though, weed is waayyy better than cigarettes.

Never touched much of anything myself. No particular reason why, I just have better things to spend my time on, like doing fat chicks and taking pictures of my ass in a thong to post on FTR.

I didn't read any other responses.
I say you're not missing anything. I smoked a lot in HS and early college. To quote South Park "It makes you ok with being bored and one day you wake up and realize you're not good at anything", plus I spent waaaaaay to much money on it.
Cigarette's are an easy no (smoked for 4 years). The easy way to not get addicted is to never try it. Again, you're missing zero.

I haven't touched any drugs besides Weed until I was over 30. I never thought I could be trusted and most likely I would have drunk just too much alcohol with it and made a complete mess out of myself. Yes I do love drugs but only when I am in "a good space" = mentally happy. I never take drugs to pick myself up. I also limit the amount of alcohol.
Yes I have smoked weed for over 15 years now but never when I have stuff to do i.e. work/around the house. I am good in limiting myself to smoking weed as a pure after-work-delight.
Long story short, why would you do it if you don't want it?

Oops of course. For a first timer I would suggest don't drink any alcohol. Have some great friends around and if possible a Playstation/Xbox. Also your favourite music channel should be on and if you are like me your partner should be close. I always get horny when I am stoned that's why my wife likes it when I'm toking.

Well I don't think I am going to do it. Its kinda one of those "I haven't done it for so long, that why start now" type of things.
I still don't think anything bad about it, I just don't think its for me.
Cool on all the answers tho.

Weed is awesome. Your girlfriend trying to make you have sex with her right after a bong is not
Seriously tho, each to their own. If you have no inclination to do it, good for you. If getting high and watching countless hours of Drawn Together or Twin Peaks is your thing, also good for you.

If you haven't tried it there's no reason to start.
I smoked almost daily from when I was 19 until I was about 27. No drug tests back then, and most of the people I partied with, I also worked with.
I stopped when my wife got pregnant with our first kid and haven't smoked in over 22 years. Do I miss it? Not really. It was a part of my life at the time, but I don't miss it.

It isn't addictive unless you are smoking daily for a prolonged period, unlike many other drugs. Some of my close friends are addicted, but that was after months of smoking daily while they were at school.
I usually have a good time when i am high; it almost always picks me up when i am sad and relaxes me when i am stressed. I have never smoked alone, though.
Smoking with my friends and then going on long adventures - driving or walking - is one of my favorite things to do. But all i can do when i get really high is sit and listen to music/watch movies. That's not bad but i can't sit still and do nothing for long so i usually end up falling asleep.

was listening to a gene simmons interview on NPR a few days ago, he had some pretty surprising and interesting viewpoints on drugs. Ive kinda felt the same as him for the past couple of years, but I still drink and probably smoke 4 times a year. Lately Ive been contemplating not smoking ever again and never binge drinking again. I really like to get fucking hammered, but the possibility of having to give alcohol up all together seems to make it not worth it. I really enjoy beer, its one of those things like wine, cheese, and porn; theres so much out there and such a variety, it would really suck to be shut off from any of these wonderful things.

There arn't very many truely dangerous drugs out there if you're mature enough to recognize addiction and create a few fail-safes.
No one can tell you if getting into or staying away from drugs is a good decision for you.
Your life won't be any different after weed. You'll just have a new option for those boring afternoons. If you have a lot of free time in your schedule, you might end up a heavy user for a period of a few weeks, months or years. If you have an incredibly stressful and heavy schedule, MJ may "motivate" you to stop being so motivated for a day. Those are about the worst case scenarios, where marijuana is concered.
As far as a gateway drug, MJ probably will be for you. MJ is far and away the best high out there, imo. It puts you in a great mood, then tickles your brain in such a beautiful and vivid way that you'll probably love the experience and this will at least open up a curiosity about other drugs.

You smoke once every 13 weeks and you think you have a problem!?
Even with a hectic schedule and bad health, this has to be considered incredibly responsible consumption.
Do you feel smoking quarter-yearly is negatively affecting you/your life?

I like to consider myself the product of the many mistakes I've made and experiences I've had. Since the chance that you'll walk away with any permanent damage is small, you might as well sample a little MJ just to give you a little insight into that world.
Assuming your kids will benefit from the wisdom you gain in life, why would you ever want to keep yourself from it? (it being wisdom, not MJ) Don't take this as reason to actively seek out drugs, but if you're a little curious about it there are some positives to be had.

I knew when I wrote that it was a complete ramble, but I wasnt saying smoking so rarely is bad for me, but it doesnt really do anything for me. During the first half of highschool I smoked near daily, and that wasnt good.
The thing I was trying to convey is that I have been putting a lot of thought into it and Im just not sure that drugs (including alcohol) can bring anything useful to my life. The fun that they do bring is way out of balance with the problems they can bring. Im not saying everyone is going to turn into an alcoholic, cokehead, pothead, ect, but there is a chance that youll be that one. I just dont see how that risk is worth it.
Maybe Im a hypocrite though. Im a adrenalin junkie, I love that rush, and theres a chance that youll have hte parachute that doesnt open, or the climbing gear that breaks, but for some reason this seems different to me. Maybe its not, whatever.

I wonder if you quit alcohol for 4 months for a prop bet - would you crack open that first beer the moment to clock strikes midnight that last night or if you have an indifference to it.
If you can develop a taste for beer, can you not the un-develop that same taste?

Im not saying everyone is going to turn into an alcoholic, cokehead, pothead, ect, but there is a chance that youll be that one. I just dont see how that risk is worth it.

There is certainly appreciable risk in most of the recreational drugs. But that risk is different for different people. I personally perceive my own risk of becoming habitually addicted to drugs as high.
I have a low resistance to my own urges but I can create certain fail-safes for myself. Informing my close friends to keep an eye on my drug use, trying to budget consumption and cold-turkey treatment are some of the ways I help to protect myself from myself. You could do as gabe does and never buy MJ but always be open to having a little smoke-session.
So I feel like my true risk of developing addiction is very small because I am ever vigilant of my own consumptions and have no truly destructive friends. Toss in just a dash of research on the topic and I feel like you can really start to say that the positives (experiences, leisure) will out-weigh the negatives (mental, physical, emotional, social health).

meh, idk Im around a lot of coke heads and it just seems like doing that shit is such a terrible decision.
Drugs just are like entering a cheat code; you dont have to do the work to have an expierence, but once you have all the weapons unlocked the game quickly gets boring. Yet playing with out the cheat seems mundane as well. Or something.

It's a very sound decision to stay away from coke and I'm not even going to try to sway you from that.
And I understand what you're trying to say about cheat codes - I think. But does it not give you a deeper understanding of the "game" when you start thinking about more abstract things like how the cheat codes work? Before cheat codes, you may have had a very solid understanding of the games mechanics from experience though you had no clue how the game works. After finding out about cheat-codes, you realize that people programmed the games and this gives you a deeper understanding of the game itself. Do you follow?

Rilla, I understand your point about the game theory, but I don't really believe it.
Just because you can use the cheat codes doesn't necessarilly mean you will start understanding how the game is actually programmed; unless you make the cheat yourself, but that is like the guy who started making acid or LSD- he already knew about the mechanics of what he was creating. The people who take said drugs don't know how its made, otherwise they would make it themselves. Which (for the most part) doesn't happen.
Maybe there are some intelligent people out there who, when they get high, look into the world around them and start understanding more about how the world works; but from the people I know most people just use it to get high and have a good time, or they start thinking about how the world works, but they are so wrong they start falling into a sort of quasi-world, where, in their world they know how it works, but in the real world they are way off.
That was a very big run-on sentance, but I lack the english education to punctualize it propperly.

well if I become an alcoholic, Id have to quit cold turkey and never have another drop. Thats not cool.
|
I wonder if you quit alcohol for 4 months for a prop bet - would you crack open that first beer the moment to clock strikes midnight that last night or if you have an indifference to it.
If you can develop a taste for beer, can you not the un-develop that same taste?
|
I've done that. I used to drink nearly every night until I was super drunk. Not in the alcoholic sense, but in the fun sense, like the way college students do it. Now I live somewhere that I know no one but my girlfriend and she's not a drinker so I obviously stopped drinking too. I don't have the slightest urge to drink whatsoever.
At the same time though, the only reason I ever drank was to get all shitty and make a story of the night. I've never been the "Man, I need a drink after work" kinda guy if that makes any sense.
