I know we have a whole community of smart guys here. So I'm posting a non poker related question.
Does anyone know if the larger ISP's keep logs of emails sent and received on their pop mail accounts?
I'm involved in a civil suit in which emails had been altered by someone and two copies, one altered and one legitimate exist.
Also is there any way to authenticate an email. Any way to tell a real from an altered?
I would really appreciate any feedback anyone may have on this.
Thank you all.

They're stored somewhere. You should be able to retreive them.

there is tag lines in the email that are not seen by the user. they are there for tracking and these kind iof things. how do ya think they track down kiddy porographers. you are never hidden if you have an IP or send email.

you can talk to your isp or have your lawyer do the talking. Sure anyone can print out an email that is edited, but the isp has it on thier servers and they could fax the courts the real email.

That is pretty much what I figured. My host dosen't keep records of the emails, they are very small. I suspect someone like Charter is going to be keeping them because they are most likely required by the government.
Thanks all

Yes, it is possible that it exists on mutiple servers. The sending and/or receiving servers. They may capture emails for this very reason and then purge them after a certain amount of time (but it's just a plausible that they don't. Especially if they aren't required to). More realistically, it was caught in the nightly backup if the email was received and remained on the host long enough to be backed up before the user POP'd in and got it.
Also, if the other person altered the email and they are using POP, then the copy that was altered is local to their PC. If they have the option enabled to leave a copy of the message on server, then that message will be in its un-edited form on the host since POP can't write back to the server (iirc)sh.

Sure, forensic investigators can compare time stamps on the related messages and logs. And if the above scenario came into play, it should be quite easy.
Good luck
