okay, this is a heavily debated topic, and i say its time to settle it. theres always a point made that you have to look at simpsons over all 20 seasons, or however old it is. i would ask that this not be mentioned, because who cares? i never watch the new ones, and neither does anyone else who knows whats up. so for our purposes, well just assume its first 9 seasons. here are 3 major points of why the simpsons are better:
1) the writing is phenomenal. there are allusions to classic literature, religion, politics, and movies all the time, and are very well placed and used. its 2 dimensional in that its not just slap stick humor, its also intellectual humor.
2) they have incredible character depth. i mean beyond the family, every character on that show is fucking hilarious. just to name a few: burns, barney, moe, comic book guy, otto, skinner, chief wiggum, ralph wiggum, apu, troy mcclure, lionel hutz, that nerdy scientist guy. there are plenty more, but the point is that they are consistent and have so many different ways to make you laugh.
3) this point was made by a friend of mine and i think its very important. they have much more emotional depth, the characters are more real and more human, not just vessels for telling jokes.

Family Guy is written by manatees whilst The Simpsons are written by geniuses (or genii). Family Guy is ok but cannot be compared to The Simpsons which is already a living part of modern history.

I voted Simpsons but if you want better results you should post why someone would prefer Family Guy. Obviously Simpsons is more likely to win the poll when the first post in the thread is a pro-Simpsons rant.

I never could get into the Simpsons, never thought it was that funny
Family Guy is hit or miss for me, either I cannot stop laughing or it seems like the dumbest shit ever.

The Family Guy has the feel of a show where writers just think of any gags possible, then try to tie them together with a half-ass storyline. That's why I can't get into it. I mean it's funny and I laugh, but it's kinda hard to sit through an episode because like Spenda said, it's hit or miss.
First 9 seasons of The Simpsons easily wins.

oh, and you can't compare the two shows in question. That's like comparing Shaq in the present to Dwight Howard in the present.
In its prime, Simpsons was better than Family Guy in its prime (present).
Right now The Simpsons suck and Family Guy is just starting out but dominates The Simpsons at everything.

simpsons before season 10 > family guy
simpsons post season 10 < family guy
that's about the gist of it.
and bigger long and uncut wins by a landslide. the simpsons movie was meh.

Simpsons in its prime was easily one of the top 10 shows of all time, not just a cartoon.
Early southpark was just terribad. When Comedy Central told Stone and Parker they could do whatever they wanted, just to get them to come back, and Southpark became what it is now (a serious commentary on some of the worlds most current news with a brutal turn around time) It's easily one of the best cartoons ever.
Family guy is hillarious with great plots, but it IMO lacks the depth that the simpsons had that made it such a huge success. Sadly the simpsons has lost that edge, and will crawl in a hole and die... hopefully sooner rather than later.

i believe that Simpsons is more a reflection of things within society such as literature and politics.
where as family guy focuses more on how people act within society.
in the Simpsons there are fewer references to more social issues like homosexuality its more of a sub thing with Smithers. where as in family guy homosexuality is brought up in almost every episode with stewie with stewie. also there is more things having to do with the way people act within the society and with each other where as the simpsons seem to be talking about a greater issue such as global warming or some shit like that where as family would focus on something like dealing with the gay neighbor who wants to molest chris.
cliff notes: simpsons focuses on things like global warming which is a broader issue, family guy focuses on the interactions between individuals whne they are presented an issue like joe being a paraplegic.
i find how people interact with one another more interesting then a global issue such as global warming thus i enjoy family guy more.

I dont watch a lot of comedies on television
I watch:
-married w/ children
-Seinfeld
-Scrubs
-Reno 911
-The Office
I'm sure I'll take crap for what is on my list, but like I've said, I'm not going to support shows I think, constantly and consistently do a disservice to my religion. If you have a problem with the shows I've listed, then you, yourself, can boycott them.

Silly TV fish. It will obviously be much easier for us to tell you why your choices are not as great as ours until you finally see the light. Buckle in.

just for fun and not to hijack on purpose:
-married w/ children (good classic sitcom, never was a huge fan but i watched a bunch of shows)
-Seinfeld (i think you're bias here...lol... i'm the same towards this show as the one above)
-Scrubs (watched the first season, good show, never watched any episodes outside of that first day though)
-Reno 911 (saw a couple scenes and laughed my ass off and told my friends about it. it were the scenes where some crack dealer chick got caught by the cops a few times but each time the crack head would claim that she's undercover and the cops would let her go)
-The Office (own seasons 1-2 and will be getting 3-4 shortly. only tv series i own on dvd. amazing)

Also, I'll probably take crap for this, but I dont go to bed until like 5AM and Rosanne is on a few channels here, I never realized how funny that show was when I was younger. The writing is great and the acting (at least from the adults) is top notch.

And Bankitdrew, Scrubs is an awesome show, definitely gets better past the first season when their craft is a little more finely tuned.

I'd like to read/read some info on the lottery situation if you could find it. i read somewhere that there was a lottery episode... was this a reflection of what happened in real life? Or was this just within the tv show and it just happened to go down hill from there?

Also, no episodes tickle me like when the kids of southpark act like adults and the adults like kids.
Red Man's Greed or that episode with the girl's fortune telling device or 'the list.'

I'm not a huge South Park fan. Generally I watch for about 2/3 of the show. The first 1/3 I really enjoy, the second 1/3 I think they're just repeating the same joke again and again and being repetitive and get bored and then I switch stations before the show finishes. Maybe I'm too old.
Its not so much I dont like the humor, I just obviously cant take it in 1/2 hr doses. I often record it though and at least watch a bit of it.

i estimate ftr's attention span at 3 replies. gmml brought up south park on the 3rd reply and ever since then we've been talking about every other good tv show in creation, along with the holocaust and japanese internment camps. WTF DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH THE SIMPSONS AND FAMILY GUY???

I'm obsessed with non sequiter humor in general so Family Guy and its not even close. I stopped watching the simpsons years ago as south park and family guy are just way closer to humor I enjoy.

Simpsons used to play a wide range of jokes, but lately they've tightened and been really predictable. Family Guy plays a wide range of jokes, even though they play a lot of trash. This can work because they're unpredictable. Either style is fine, but I would prefer the Simpsons to open up because at this point their jokes are really exploitable with the TV schedule structure.

iopq and mix - im talking about simpsons in their prime, not new seasons. family guy is "in their prime" right now, so its only fair to compare that. i would say its pretty likely family guy suffers the same fate, or lack thereof.

people saying the simpsons sucks are probably 14. the simpsons used to be so awesome but they have without a doubt fell off in recent years.
family guy is appealing to most of you because you think you are smart because it offers more smart jokes that you understand

I guess you kinda have to have grown up watching The Simpsons to really like/appreciate it.
I don't think people like Family Guy b/c they "think they're smart". It's just funny imo.
