So I'm taking the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) tomorrow and I'm looking over some practice questions. One of them has been driving me crazy.
Stan drove for h hours at a constant rate of r miles per hour. How many miles did he go during the final 20 minutes of his drive?
A. 20r
B. hr/3
C. 3rh
D. hr/20
E. 3r
Isn't the answer r/3???? WTF am i retarded?

ya it's pretty easy to see that the answers are stupid:
say he was going 100mph for 1 hour. so he traveled how many miles in 20 mins? EDIT: The correct calculation should give us 33.33 miles.
A. 2000 miles
B. 1/3 of a mile
C. 300 miles
D. 1/20 of a mile
E. 300 miles

It should be r/3 logically. Now, let's see the damn answer choices.

B gives you how much he traveled during the last 1/3rd of his trip.

B is correct if h = 1.
D is correct if h = 20/3.
The others are all incorrect unless r = 0

So if you're going crazy for h hours at a rate of r, how crazy will be after the real GRE?

ha
@dixie: B is still wrong, eh.
h= 1
r = 100
h * r / 3 = 33.3
Also the units are wrong
A. mph
E. mph

h and r aren't units, they are variables
hr = h*r, not hours

h and r are variables with units
h: hours
r: miles/hours
h*r: hours * miles / hours = miles

Actually r and h are both unitless, as per the question definition.
"Stan drove for h hours at a constant rate of r miles per hour."
If they had units the quesiton would be stated as:
"Stand drove for h at a constant rate of r".
The answer should be unitless too, because the quesiton was:
" How many miles ... ?"
If the answer was supposed to have units the question would be:
"How far ... ?"
Of course, this is just me being nitpicky. I understand exactly where you're coming from, that even if the variables are unitless, you have to manipulate them while keeping in mind the units they were originally attached to.

This kid in my graduate lab from China said he got a 780 on the verbal. He knew the definitions of all these words I have never heard of. Yet he couldn't write a sentence to save his life.

One of my roommates took the GRE a little while ago and got 790 on her verbal and 740 in quantitative. The verbal makes sense--she is a writer, currently works at a publishing company, and majored in a writing-related field as an undergrad.
But she doesn't have any idea how that 740 in happened. Her claim is that if she, who dislikes math and is not great at it, can get a 740 in quantitative section, then the future of engineering must be pretty glum.
Also, she likes to use this fact to help demonstrate how the GRE is overall a badly designed test whose results can only be very loosely correlated with a person's knowledge and skills.

I don't think anyone would debate this. The average for engineers is 780 I believe. The math concepts are below high-school calculus.
