So I have a five hour flight on Friday (plus I travel a ton for work) and I'm thinking of buying a PSP? Is it still a mainstream system? Is it on the way out? It would probably get a decent amount of use and gamestop is advertising refurbished systems for $119.

I have a PSP and FFT my fav game of all time. I might pick up that god of war thingy. I play it a lot. But that's because of my sick fetish for Summoner-Calculators.

If you're going to get a PSP, better to get an older refurbished one anyways, I've heard not so great things about the newest versions screen quality.
The PSP has always been a powerful system and has only recently allowed developers to use the full processing power (reducing battery life a bit). I don't expect a true PSP "2" anytime soon.
I didn't see so much in the way of new PSP games for sale at the gamestore when I last went, but it has been around for a while and there's likely to be a lot of older(cheap!) games around. I'd suggest looking up and finding some games (and if they're actually available at the store) you'd enjoy before actually purchasing the system.
I know more about the DS, since I own one. It's in a state of transition right now with the DSi coming out. Developers may be able to use it to make better games than are out right now, but until they show they're going to, it's probably better just to stick with the PSP for handheld gaming. (The DS games lately have been terrible imo)
Also, FFT is an awesome game

The reason I'm asking about the PSP and not the DS is intended audiences. I don't feel the DS is targeted towards 24 year old gamers. Should I consider the DS as well?

Sorry, what I mean is don't buy the DS, other than using it as a MP3 player, I haven't used it in a long time.

Just look at the games for each and decide which system has more games you would want to play.
PSP:
http://www.gamerankings.com/psp/index.html
DS:
http://www.gamerankings.com/ds/index.html
Both systems are good and you can't really go wrong with either.

Those percentages are not reviews done by that website. That site takes every review from every magazine/website and displays the average percent.

I have 14 poker vids on my PSP and am watching them at lunch and on the stationary bike at the gym. I am currently watching the micro stakes grinder series from DC (WiltonTilt)

So I bought the original PSP for $110 and a 4gb memory stick. I wanted to get second battery but they don't sell them in stores for the original anymore. I also bought crisis core, god of war, and ff tactics. Good to go!

You have done well. All good games! God of War was too short, but still awesome. Also, if you ever want to know about emulators, give me a shout, Mike Tysons punchout looks great on the little screen
