As I told Daven, I'm tired of everyone and her grandmother being more fit than me. And it's my 39th birthday today. So Daven and I worked out a 2-way prop bet where I get fit or pay him, and he keeps fit or pays me.
My goals:
1. Run my "beast 5 miler" 7 times in February.
2. Lose 5 lbs.
3. Do a long run of 8+ miles.
I pay $5 per run I fail to complete and $10 if I don't lose the weight. (I was at 210 - no, swiggidy, that's not kg - kthanksforasking)
Here's Daven's side of it:

runs = 2/14
ASOS = 1/5
campus = 0/5
did get a 4hr surf in on tuesday night, but that doesn't fit in any of those boxes!!!
get fit!@
|
I have also proposed a 5 to 2 payoff if the other maxes all the goals. If Daven does everything on the list, I pay him $20. If I do everything on my list, he pays me $20. That's a total of $70 each, and we'll settle up on FT with a transfer as needed March 1.
Daven has to approve the 5 to 2 payouts. Otherwise, it's just my $50 vs. his $50.
We'll post here throughout February so y'all can heckle/encourage as you deem fit. Flame away, couch potatoes.

good luck!!!
I've just started jogging. I thought I was pretty fit as I play a lot of football - but F**K!
First few runs are a killer. Starting to quite enjoy it now. I-pod on and off you go. You've gotta listen to Eye Of The Tiger at least once on your run. Thats a rule.

how about "gotta run with one of the top 20 marathon runners in my country at least one this month"?
2am this moment. Big southerly swell hitting my local about now, tomorrow a public holiday so if i'm not in the water before dawn life is going to get pretty competitive/serious in the line-up....
ode to getting shacked@
and then going for some kind of run

I don't listen to music while running. I enjoy seeing deer, looking at nature and dodging rednecks. I don't own an ipod or mp3 player, either, but where I run (lots of sharp hills on twisty, narrow mountain roads), you stay safe by hearing cars coming before you see them.
Beast 5 miler tomorrow - 1st of the prop bet. I'll report back and let you know (if I live through it).
Have fun in the surf, daven!!

Rob, it may be a little far, but if you decide to pull a Forrest Gump and keep running to Atlanta feel free to drop in and say hi.

wooooooooooooooah that is a skewed set of goals
if youre overweight you shouldnt even attempt to run 5 miles. As somebody who has a history of extreme long-distance endurance (used to jog 4 miles just to get myself tired enough to fall asleep), after getting just a little overweight, i cant even jog 1 mile.
for somebody overweight, 5 pounds in the first month of diet/exercise is easy peasy. even if youre not overweight, all you hafta do to lose the five pounds is do like normal for the first 29 days then on the day of weigh in dont eat much that day then run that 5 miles and you will weigh fewer than 5 pounds less. or just diet for like 2-3 days and you'll lose 5 pounds of water weight
im not trying to burst a bubble or anything, but just warning that your goals are mega asymetrical. one is super easy, the others are super hard and hazardous to health. really the only reason im mentioning anything is because of those super long runs that any self-respecting physician would advise you not to achieve in one month's time, especially since youre of heart attack/stroke age. even then, theyre just miserable as fuck and basically impossible if youre out of shape
honestly since this is a friendly bet of encouragement, i suggest revisiting the criteria. confide in jyms or lukie when it comes to losing weight imo. i know how to do it super well, but i dont have much experience with it in practice so i dont have a really good idea of what to expect so as to make it realistically challenging in a short time period

I was leveling a bit for laughs. I'm not a couch potato, exactly.
I ran a half marathon in October, but it was slow: 11 minute pace. I have run my whole life. I'm just slower than I used to be. I am a bit over weight (at 6' 1" a good BMI => 185 and I'm 210). So losing a few pounds would be good.
The reason my fitness levels suck is that I had kidney stones a month ago, right after my Chistmas binge-eating sloth fest.
Sooooooooo...I've gone back to running gently, 2 - 4 miles per run last couple weeks, working my way back to prior fitness levels. I ran the beast 5-miler (mentioned above) 6 times in late November, early December.
I turn 40 in 365 days, so I'd like get pretty fit and return to road racing semi-competively, trying to log some nice times in the half-marathon, 10k and 5k - maybe try another marathon (I ran one in 1999). It would be nice to get listed in the Top 3 of the age-group winners for the 40 - 44 year-old males. That's my goal. I finished below the 50th percentile for FEMALES in my age-group in October, and the Top 3 of the 50 - 54 FEMALES finished ahead of me!
Because Daven rock climbs and I try to, and I know he runs and works out, I asked him to do the prop bet to keep me motivated. Trust me when I say I don't want to kill myself. If I feel I might be so fatigued I could injure something, I stop, walk and stretch. If I get overtrained, I back off. Take a morning off.
I'd rather pay off Daven a few bucks and hit most of these goals than hurt myself with some long term injury. But I know I'll get more fit if people know about the prop bets and if I post about how well I'm doing on my plan.
Thanks for your concern, tho' - I think some of my students (having found out there's a midterm next week) might hope I do kick the bucket while running this weekend.

Thanks, kmind, Jyms and wes. Gator, I doubt I'll be running to Atlanta, but we should grab a cup of coffee some day and talk poker. I play soccer with some fellas in Webb Bridge Park some Sundays, so I'm down in Alpharetta a good bit.

I'm pretty proud of this BEAST 5-miler. Here's a race profile. If you're familiar with cycling, I consider HUGE hills "hors categorie" climbs. Ones where you shuffle to the top, not running, really, just trying not to stop. There's 3 HC hills, one each in the first 3 miles.

The road in front of my house winds down into a river valley between two ridges, and the route climbs out of the valley up and over one ridge and back, then up and over the other one and back. Here's a look down our driveway. You can see across the road to the other ridge. We live at the top, so these are gentle hills.

A nice, gentle downhill start, into the valley. About a 1k warmup.

The next pic is from the bottom of HC1. I drew a circle around a yellow house you can barely see through the trees. The road switch-backs twice, curves around behind the house and finishes 250 meters beyond it to the right.

HC2 is steeper and, after a double switch-back, finishes behind the house you can see at the top of the hill (top of the hill is about even with the 2nd story level). The picture is NOT taken from the bottom of the hill since the roads curves.

HC3 is shorter and steeper than the others. Check out the telephone poll to get a perspective on steepness. And it's gentler at the top. Still, a quarter mile long, with 200 brutal meters at the bottom.

Pretty scenery. I see deer on about half my morning runs. And it's actually a benefit that most of the hills curve around in the trees. You can't see how far it is to the top!!
Gotta face the BEAST twice this week to stay on target. I'm running my VERY flat 3 miler tomorrow to rest up.

nice looking run dude!
I went out for a sunset boulder session, got back a few hours ago and fingers are juiced! I need to post some photos of that piece of rock I'm trying to haul up (prop bet - ASOS - 2/5), I'm a long way from doing it - it's proving to be one of the hardest things I've ever spent any serious energy on... I need to be stronger to do it I think, so tomorrow I campus (prop bet 0/5 so far!!!)

BEAST: 2/7
Long run: 0/1
Weight Loss : 0/5
I should have waited until Wednesday for another dose of the BEAST, but I don't have time Wednesday morning. So it was today or Friday. Friday would be behind schedule. So today it was. It hurt a little, but I got 'er done.
I'm fit enough for the long run, but it'll be challenging to fit in the recovery time around 5 more BEASTS. I still haven't lost weight, but I think my body is in that "hydration releveling" phase, where it stores up a bunch water thinking "ZOMFG the couch potato is MOVING." I'm trying to overhydrate to convince my system it'll be OK.
Whoa, this is gonna be a big time challenge.

BEAST: 3/7
Long run: 0/1
Weight Loss : 0/5
LoL. The weight loss is gonna keep me from maxing this one, I'm guessing. Gotta stop stuffing the cake hole. I think the following run schedule is doable.
Sun (2/15) BEAST 4
Wed (2/18) BEAST 5
Sun (2/22) Long Run
Wed (2/25) BEAST 6
Fri (2/27) BEAST 7
I'm pretty beat up right now, so I wanna build in some good recovery days around the long run. These aren't the only runs I do. I try to run every MWF and at least once on the weekend. I'm hoping for a 10-miler next Sunday, but I will be happy with anything greater than or equal to 8 :P

With kmind's "enjoy the scenery" in mind, I did a beast this morning with my glasses on. Saw 5 deer, a pileated woodpecker, a dozen of the neighbors' dogs and two chickens (yes, our neighbors have "yard birds"). As the deer ran away and the dogs ran toward me, I noticed they were having significantly fewer problems with the hills than I was. Ran it in 62 minutes, which is 12:30 pace. Like to run one in less than an hour before the month's over. Two recovery runs, one beast and then the long run next weekend. Still no noticeable weight loss.
Rock climbers talk about having the volts or power in their arms to crank past crux sections. Runners I know talk about having amps to handle hills. Having watts would be better than volts or amps. Here's what I've got on the electricity-fitness profile:
[ ] Amps
[ ] Volts
[ ] Watts
[x] Ohms

it rained today, so no climb. Will campus this evening instead I hope.
Went running this afternoon though, the middle hour i linked up with a couple of buddies - it was the recovery run for one of them after his 1hr14 half marathon during the weekend. We ran a hill. My legs are tired.
7/14 runs
2/5 asos
1/5 campus

BEASTS 5/7
Long Run 0/1
Weight Loss 0/5
Got in a damp BEAST between thunderstorms today, and ran pretty well. This is at least the 3rd time I ran the beast when without the bet I would have run shorter or not at all. Screw the weight - I can lose it later. It's just fun to be runnin' well again.
Long run is dicey for the weekend. It's supposed to snow. Could make things interesting.

Hit the gym for some full body workouts! It will not only drop your bodyfat but you will also gain muscle. Problem is, you may not immediately lose any weight, so you may lose your propbet, but in the longrun you'll be getting stronger and leaner.

Yeah, my wife's an attorney, and it just wasn't very funny after having to explain what each of the 4 things were. But she gave me a little "half laugh" to be nice.

Lifting weights is one of the best way of burning calories and getting fit. Replacing fat weight with muscle weight is better than weight loss imo.

Long Run 1/1
BEASTS 5/7
Weight Loss 1/5
I just got done with a 9 miler this morning. The high temperature during the run was 25 degrees. I felt good, but damn I'm slow. I ran 11 minute pace (which is still a minute a mile better than my best BEAST pace). But I'm feeling fit again, finally.
Looks like I'll owe Daven $10 for the weight loss, unless I get the stomach flu after my last BEAST run :P

Long Run 1/1
BEASTS 6/7
Weight Loss 1/5
I'm starting to get serious about the weight loss. I'm going to owe Daven $$$, but I'd like to lose about 3 of the 5 pounds, and think I'm on target for that.
I didn't even time my BEAST runs when I first started back, so they were probably 65ish minutes at the beginning of February. I ran yesterday's BEAST in 58 minutes, plus/minus 1 minute. I didn't wear a watch. I just checked the clock in the house at start and finish. So my average pace is down probably more than a minute per mile for the course.
On the BEAST, there are total about 3/4 miles of "stair master" hills, parts so steep that you just shuffle to the top at maybe 18 - 20 minute per mile pace. So running 10 minute pace on the other 4 1/4 miles of the course would mean about 57 - 58 minutes overall. So even though the overall time is slow, I know I'm picking up top end speed. Well, it's not speed, yet, but I am slowly losing slowness :P

BEAST #7 is DONE!!
It's been raining steadily for the past 36 hours. I wimped out and didn't run yesterday. I rolled over and got two extra hours of sleep. LoL. It was raining even harder this morning. I finally geared up in high tech running fabrics and baseball cap and got 'er done.
I'll weigh in and report back, but I'm gonna owe the $10. Daven, PM me your FT SN so I can transfer the cash :P

I ended up unable to run the last few days of february...
so final tally of
10/14 runs
4/5 asos
1/5 campus
as per the rules of engagement - $20 on my runs ($2 for each i miss), $15 on the ASOS sessions, and $15 on the campus sessions (both $3 for each i miss)
so, by my reckoning, i failed by 4x$2 + 5x$3
Weigh in and let me know how much to send ya!!!

I weighed in at 207, so I completed all the runs but failed to lose enough weight. The weight was $10, all or nothing.
So -$10 for me.
SN is 4gooner4 on Full Tilt.
I just really appreciate the prop bet, this thread and all the guys who chimed in with ideas and support. I seriously ran twice as much this month as I would have without the prop bets (at least!!), and I did lose a bit of weight, too. So even though I'm "paying up" for "failing" to lose enough weight, I'm really pretty stoked about my improved fitness.
Thanks, guys!! And Daven, I really appreciate you taking this one up for a bit of challenge. I can't thank you enough.

money should be there shortly! nice to hear that you're feeling fitter, another month of this and you'll be on fire - so, again? I need to get out running more, and I want to get climbing fit before Europe. It's fun to keep this out there!!!
If so, I'd like to make some adjustments to my requirements
20 x runs (can sub in 2hr+ surfs tho!!!)
5 x climbing sessions at project area (wasn't able to get on ASOS every session due to conditions)
5 x climbing specific strength training (not just campus!)
Keen?

If so, I'd like to make some adjustments to my requirements
20 x runs (can sub in 2hr+ surfs tho!!!)
5 x climbing sessions at project area (wasn't able to get on ASOS every session due to conditions)
5 x climbing specific strength training (not just campus!)
Keen?

All right, I'm all-in. I'd like to be running the BEAST every MWF morning before work and my 7.5 miler on the weekend. But I have some minor surgery later this month that may keep me from running for 5 - 6 days. So...
9 BEASTS
3 Long Runs: 2 x 7.5 miles & 1 x 10+ miles
5 lbs Weight Loss
If I put up $3 for each run ($36 total), that leaves $14 all-or-nothing on losing weight. No money on it, but I'd also like to run a BEAST in 54 minutes, overall 9 minute pace or faster.
Edit: I like the surf-swap for the runs. That's definitely fitness activity, and it's gotta be good cross-training for running and climbing.

BEASTS 2/9 - - ran Friday
Long Run (7.5 miles) 1/2 - - ran today
Weight Loss 4/8 - - I lost 3 pounds last month, down to 207, so 5 more would be 202. I weighed in at 206, but I'm kinda counting total weight loss from 210 peak.
The run today really sucked. I'm just not fit enough to string big runs together. I was dead about 10k into a 12k run, so that last mile really hurt. Oh, well, the worse it sucks, the more "good" you know you've done on the "no pain no gain" scale. Good weather, finally, so I don't have any excuses for not getting out there and running my ass off (literally) this month.

went out for 90minutes of hill running today - the third hill back to home was killer... backing up on 9km of flat road running a couple of days ago.
runs 9/20
ASOS 1/5 (hoping for sunshine this weekend to get that number up)
campus etc 1/5 (i'm lazy when it comes to putting in the work to build climbing specific strength)

BEASTS 3/9
I took a few days off, ran a short run Wednesday. Work has been exhausting lately, so today's beast was an interesting mixture of total body stress-fatigue and well-rested legs. So I feel a ton better physically after the run. Just have to get more sleep and enjoy Spring Break - a chance to get work done while students and other faculty are out of the office :P

was all psyched for a long sunday evening run, but then shit went down with guns and cops and stuff (i'm ok, except i dunno if i'll be able to sleep for a while. Might take some time off work..)
anyway, today way too tired to run after police interviews late and then no sleep, instead i'm heading out climbing to try and clear my mind
right, outa here
