Ok, I've decided that since school started back up I've been really depressed. I've been sleeping 12 hours a night, not playing poker, not doing shit. I don't feel like doing anything ever. I believe this is largely in part to the rage and frustration that builds up within me on a constant basis in addition to the stress newly created by my thesis project.

So now its time to purge these emotions, and direct them at the things that deserve it. I will post my purgings in this thread on an irregular basis. You all are welcome to post your own as well, or you can also post to empathize with my pain.

Sunday, October 12, 2008: Pardon Our Progress

Today I was driving to my school, which is currently under construction/renovation. I encountered a sign on the side of the road that said "Please Pardon our Progress." You guys have seen something similar to this before, right?

I was deeply offended by this sign. Let's analyze what the school is intending to achieve in telling the public with this sign:

1. We're sorry that theres cones everywhere and hay all over the grassless ground.

2. But actually, we aren't really sorry cause CHECK OUT THIS PROGRESS Y'ALL!

So its basically a completely disingenuous statement. Why can't they just have an orange sign that says "school under construction" or "men at work next 2000 feet?" Or why can't they express a sincere apology, like "Pardon the mess." Or if they want to be positive, why not just a big sign with info on the new improvements, perhaps a rendering of the new campus?

Oh and the progress, its a new parking lot. They completely mowed down the vegetation that provided a nice buffer between the school and the 4-lane highway, and put a parking lot there. That's the extent of the renovation. And it didn't alleviate the parking situation at all, its still virtually impossible to find a space if you arrive at school after like noon.

you should talk to lukie, he's been working out and eating healthy. This may help your cause.
If your so pissed off at a construction sign you may need to release some energy.

Vitamin D, (light) exercise and some sunshine will do wonders for minor depression.

yeah solid advice so far, the whole construction sign thing is preety out of the ordinary, not many people would even notice the slight change in wording let alone get angry about it.
"This sure beats Super Mario Bros.!" is my ejaculation catch phrase.

It's funny because I just finished a business class that had a section which basically told us how to write like that. So be warned there's more signs like that coming into the world!

Monday, October 13, 2008: Conformists at the Wheel

I encountered a frightening form of conformity in our culture today. After having spent all night in my design studio space at school working on shit and then going to class from 9am-7pm today, my personal well-being was threatened twice today on the drive home. Both times involved someone who apparently had such a "go with the flow" attitude that they actually carried this disposition into their driving principles, and therefore couldn't merge into traffic on the interstate like a normal vertebrate.

In both cases I was put to a decision. I, as the defensive driver, have to choose between:

a) gassing it and allowing this person to merge behind.
b) applying the breaks in hopes that he merges in front of me.

This is of course a game theory dilemma to which there is no optimal play. Since I had been up over 24 hours I decided to take the passive route both times and slow down, but of course I was then encountered by another delightful aspect of poker and life, bad luck, as the poor sap also decided to slow down. This of course started a chain reaction which, long story short, ended with both of us slowing to 20 mph.

But there is a happy end to this story. I had always wondered how automobile collisions could possibly happen on a dry interstate in broad daylight. "They are driving in a straight line for fucks sake! What could possibly go wrong?!?" I now know.

Driving across Michigan I saw:
A semi change lanes for no apparent reason coming within like 10 feet of hitting the SUV that was about to pass it on its left, thank god the guy slammed on the brakes and so did I.

Someone missed there exit and decided to say fuck it and merge back onto the expressway, were I was occupying the lane they were previously in. So I had the awesome split second decision of just get over in the left lane w/o looking and hope for the best OR take a split second to look and risk getting hit by dumb ass, I went with the 2nd option andgot over just in time.

Also on a two lane expressway one semi truck decided to pass another semi truck for no apparent reason, except he ended up in the left lane maxed out at 60mph while the semi in the right lane was doing about 59.99 mph, so it took him a good minute to pass and there was a nice back up behind them.

Also what is up with the assholes who do not hop into the left lane when the expressway is empty when they see people in the process of merging on... it helps everyone!

On the way in from the airport this morning on a 2 lane road stopped at traffic lights were 6 trucks in one lane, and 1 truck in the other. As expected it took off at exactly the same speed as all the trucks in the other lane meaning every car on the road had to go their speed.
Just playing to improve.

I think the best reaction and the more "correct" decision is to speed up, as the other person is going to realize what is happening after you make your decision and naturally slow down, either way... most ppl's natural instinct is to slow down given potential danger.

plus, if you have a V8 its no problem right?

sleeping during the night and doing none active stuff during the day is a trigger for depression, this included me working in an office job, when I play poker and don't get out, and when I skipped class in college and made too much music at home and worked on my business (UC Santa Cruz going to class is gorgeous and is like hiking to class)

just sounds like you need sun and exercise... and it could be as little as 30 minutes a day at some point. You're doing nothing but enjoying the outdoors during this time, walking or running and tension will release and m0tivation will increase. Exercise is always a catalyst towards mental health and motivation, especially if it is outdoors.

I highly discourage any use of drugs or alcohol to alleviate the problem, as it generally does the opposite if you're in this spot.

Try waking up and taking a short walk with headphones. It starts the day off nicely and gets you in a good frame of mind. You will then build goals for the day in your head, and eventually you will love this thought building and motivation building morning exercise.
