A few buddies and I were talking about all these games we used to play and how fun they were and how sad it is we don't really play anything anymore. We decided that since work is starting for us soon we may be able to have a standard schedule and could play a game an hour every couple nights or so. We want to play something along the lines of Baldur's Gate with a multiplayer RPG (third person) format. We don't want to get involved with WoW, evercrack, or anything like that where it's more about lvling and guild BS and sucking the life from you. The game neverwinter night's comes to mind but I've never played it or know what it is, it just keeps popping into my head. Any suggestions?

Cliff notes: Need a third person, multiplayer RPG that is not an MMORPG, but with a story and decent gameplay.

I haven't played it but I here Elder Scroll IV: Oblivion is pretty awesome and sounds like what you are looking for.
So you click their picture and then you get their money?

I have never played the multiplayer piece, but neverwinter was good in solo mode, I can't see how you wouldn't be happy with it. Plus there are like a zillon player written mods you could go through after or instead of the main campaign.

I have that, it's a great game but I'm pretty sure it's only single player. That would be awesome multiplayer though. NWN sounds like it might be the right choice.

secret of mana is of course a great game.

I was going to recommend Breath of Fire 3, but its not multiplayer, although its a super sick game.

Well,

It sounds like you want to play a multiplayer game that is also an rpg. Of course, right now the best in the market is WoW. Almost all fantasy MMORPGs or going to be the same. Levelling, running quests, interacting with the world, pvp, etc. If you actually have a group of 3-5, WoW could be fun assuming you all play on a schedule and no one bolts ahead of the group. The storyline is quite linear (particularly for alliance) for the first 30 levels or so, and a group that size, assuming good class picks, would be fun.

I loved the Baldur's Gate series, but I haven't heard anything good about multiplayer Neverwinter Nights. I imagine it would be alot like online Baldur's Gate, so probably not much repeatability.

Conan is coming out, as is Warhammer online, but again, I think these will be the same genre as WoW. The is also Middle Earth online, but again, I think it is just a variation on WoW.

The only other recommendation I would have is Eve online. It is a spaceship game that has a cult following. You can actually download a free 14 version and try it out. You level skills over time (including logout time), so time spent levelling is not really the issue. I hear it is very pvp oriented at the higher levels, and almost like a RTS in terms of building bases, economies, etc.

I appreciate all the input so far.

What I'm kind of looking for is a single player rpgish kinda story that allows for multiplayers. That's why I'd like to stay away from WoW and a lot of the other MMORPGS. I'd like osmething where my buddies and I can connect to each other but that doesn't involve other players on the net. NWN seems to fit the bill, I'm just curious what else is out there. I don't think Baldur's gate has a multiplayer mode, does it? That might be perfect.

IIRC, Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2 both had multiplayer modes. Whether the developer is still supporting it with a multiplayer server I don't know. It is supportable on a LAN, however, I believe.

Couldn't I just host it on my computer and have people connect to my ip? I used to do that with duke nukem and warcraft.

Yeah man. I think I enjoyed making a gauntlet of cannon towers in multiplayer more than actually attacking your opponent.

Maybe because you can walk around and kill whoever you want?

I got tilted when I realized I wasn't leveling up and then lvled instantly from 3 to 23 and suddenly all the bad guys were impossible to kill.

My understanding of Oblivion for the 40 or so hours I played it, is that you have to try to use only two or three skills per level so that you get the max points per skill per level. After about 20, if you haven't specialized, then you will be unable to kill the monsters unless you go grab one of the superweapons.

Do a check online for Baldur's Gate/Neverwinter Nights. It should let you know if those can be supported by direct ip connection. My networking experience is far behind me, but it may be that you need a router in order to handle multiple ip addresses. It is worth checking in to.

Also maybe look for multiplayer rpg's on something like gamespy.

best options would be NWN (possibly NWN2 but it's kind of a system hog and crappy) or if you want the feel of a true PnP night look for Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption fttw

I had a couple friends that fucking loved NWN. I never played it myself but it sounded good. I'll see if they know if it can by hosted by their own machine, though I'm pretty sure it can as they were into it back when this was more the norm that a huge public server like those used for MMORPGs

Yeah, I may eventually go back and revert to an older save. I start work on Monday though so I don't want to get addicted to anything right away.

Easiest thing to do with Oblivion.....create a custom character and put your primary skills as shit you wouldn't ever use so that way you can max all your other skills and still be only level 1 or 2 by the time you fnish the game.

It's cheap and gimp but it's the best way to get around their retarded creature level up system...I mean fuck, the only reason to level up in RPG's is to be able to outclass your opponents or go back and smack the crap out of creatures/characters that hassled you when you were low level

You could always set up your own server for WoW and only tell your friends about it.

One cool extra feature - you have access to every item, even the programmer's ultra elite ones.

Oblivion was pretty cool, I never did much except once I got to some city after the emperor dies in the sweres or whatever I take my bow and arrow and BOOM HEADSHOT A guard who then runs after as I leave the city. Then him and i duke it out for like 5 minutes, because im just running backwards hitting him with arrows. I have to hit him like 19 times, but he dies and i take his gear which seems super bad ass.
