Mine is acting like it is ready for retirement.

anyone have a good recommendation that is under $1000 ($600-$800 would be even better). All I really use it for is poker, quickbooks, and looking at pornography. But it must be able to do all 3 at the same time.

yah wait for a $750 off $1500 coupon from dell, really cant beat that. if your budget is a lot higher, go ibm.

problem with that coupon is it only comes out once or twice a quarter and you might have to wait til end of jan or feb.

Dell is supposed to have kinda crappy quality though...

From when I looked into a laptop (year ago), HP/Compaq were the best price point for the reliability.

www.notebookreview.com is where I went - good forums and reviews

It is so unfair that there are no such coupons in Europe. At least I havent heard of them. All the good shit from Dell costs about two times in Europe compared to USA. UNFAIR!

I bought my Dell Inspiron with wuxga display for about 1,5k€. 2001FPP 1600*1200 monitor would cost about 850e :'(

I am too cheap a bastard to buy that beauty

To the point, not that many laptops have high resolution displays, Dell is probably the cheapest, 1920*1200 rocks!

I have a Dell Inspiron, was given to me for work. The resolution 1920x1200 is great. I play poker at 1600 x 1200 for a table in each corner. BensBargains.net has coupons pretty regularly check them out.

I just picked up a acer 312 tablet the other day. It fucking rocks to fold it up and play 2 tables while watching tv in the living room. Might be a bit out of your range tho. Dell is probably the best bet.

dont understand how people can deal with 1920x1200 on a laptop. each one of my 24" monitors has that resolution and its about 400% bigger than a 17" laptop and yet i sit about 2 feet away from it. im not sure i could read text at that res on a laptop.

to the original question though, still get a dell. they have decent coupons all the time. check www.techbargains.com daily. dell's quality is definitely below some of the top manafacturers (read: ibm) but for the price its most certainly worth it. plus, its not like their quality sucks, its just mediocre to above average.
