So for a while now ppl have been getting worried about the subprime crisis stuff and a general U.S. recession.
There hasn't really been a major recession since the post-Moneymaker boom. Just how bad would a serious recession be for the games?
Ez answer seems to be yes... but what about desperate ppl trying to click a mouse and win a house?

Interesting topic.
I'm sure if the looming recession will affect the games or not. I can only imagine it would have positive effect on the games (making us more +EV).

I would think less disposable income= less online poker. Only people who would be left are the people who win, a lot of which would begin losing and quit themselves.
I don't really want to take someones last dimes from them anyway.

People whose money management skills are so awful that they'd respond to a recession by gambling -- and I'm sure these people exist -- are probably busto already. You guys could be right but it seems kinda hard to believe, to me.

People with expandable income are the ones who will gamble lose and reload.

Well when Ireland was absolutely broke before we had the Cetlic Tiger boom all ppl did in Ireland was drink hard and gamble. Ppl pissed away there money and were pretty depressed.
I dont think there will be less money but depends on your morality if your taking their monies.

i dont see the affect changing much. the games already contain a small minority of american citizens as it is. besides, the rest of the world plays, too. this will further dilute any recession's affect...directly.
indirectly, though, if the american recession becomes global, which some predict, then we could see more of an affect, imo.
damned Bush. he just sold our soul to Saudi Arabia. 20 Billion in smart bombs and patriot missles? what was he thinking? i know Citi needed a bit of help, but c'mon.
Saudi Arabia has never fought a war. they have never backed us up. their own foreign policy is, "dont hurt us please. we will raise the cost of oil." all their neighbors are trying their best to drive off that regime. Saudi Arabia is on the brink of desparation. and, if they crumble, it is certain that we will see those weapons landing back here in the US...ARMED! they will most certainly end up in the wrong hands.
all that in the name of cheap oil...and our addiction/dependence on it?
hey, Bush, instead of selling our souls, not to mention making the "most powerful nation" look weaker than dogshit, why not set policies into motion to get this country "fuel independent?"
seems 20 billion would go quite a ways towards that. but, we waited to long, didnt we? and, now have to waste off money for whatever immediate help we can get.
just remember, you get what you pay for when desperate.

you could look at it this way:
if they are degenerate gamblers, they are going to lose their money anyways. so, it may as well be to you.
It's not like you (or almost any of us realistically) are such dominant a player that if it weren't for you then the person would have killed the game and left with enough money to save the family farm. but instead, because of your superior poker playing abilities he went busto, lost the farm, and was forced to pimp out his wife (and himself) to buy food, which then became crack.

Yeah, I don't know. I assume everyone playing is looking to have a good time. A recession wouldn't change that. I was just trying to say that I think that online gambling would be the first thing cut out of someones (losing player) budget. If it's not, I wish it were.
As it is I don't know anyone's financial situation who I play against. Don't give it much thought either. None of my business. Still, I would never take the attitude of someone wishing for hard times on others so that I can make a few bucks off their desperation. Not saying anyone else was wishing that either, I just felt like adding some context.

Depends how bad it gets. Sometimes people, will act rationally until they feel all hope is gone. At that point they may play recklessly, though i suspect the general casino would feel the upside of that then any mid stake grinder.

I think global economy is far on the Minor side on the List Of Things That Change The State Of The Games.
This is unfortunate because to talk about it like it's important makes you feel incredibly cool.
Every time I look at my buddylist, a fish who plays a lot can be at anything from 0.10/0.20 limit to $100PLO8 to a $50 donkament.

Isn't a lot of the world's economy reliant enough on Asia these days that the US Economy isn't the be all and end all it used to be and therefore less likely to plunge the world into doom and gloom?
