In all seriousness, is anyone else listening to the in progress hardcore history on WWI? Jesus fucking Christ what a brutal war. It's interesting how the state of technology basically created the brutality. The trench warfare stalemate that came from the strong machine gun defense created so much fucking misery.

Yeah, it's a really great series, as are all of his HCH podcasts/audiobooks I've listened to. I kind of wish I just waited and binged the whole thing-- I think that's what I'm going to do for his next series. I enjoy each episode, but by the time the next one comes out I've forgotten everything but the gist of the previous iterations. In the meantime, I still haven't paid for his backlog, which I really need to do.

Ww1 was just horrific. Even more so when you consider the lack of real information that people had before signing up and therefore their expectations of what they'd find compared to the brutal reality. Lots of them were just young boys getting blown up and massacred with no real idea of what the fuck they were getting into, no real idea of what to do and often spending a short miserable existence of pure terror before a horrible painful death.

It's funny how everyone thought it would be over quick, and then when it wasn't, and everyone was burning through troops at absurd rates, pretty much everyone started lowering requirements for the army and starting aggressive recruiting campaigns (or conscription).

It really seems like WWI was the breaking point for the notion of the glory of war. WWI was a war so much more ugly than war has ever been and afterwards, the general mentality surrounding war shifted away from it being an opportunity to demonstrate one's nationalistic pride, towards it just being the horrific ugly thing we generally view it today. Obviously there is still some of the rah rah glory left over today, but nowhere near what it was prior to WWI.

Yeah I keep meaning to grab his backlog also but my various other podcasts (common sense, freakanomics, radiolab, bert kreisher's) keep my commute filled for the most part. HCH is my favorite though.

Why was WWI called the Great War? Surely WWII, with it's use of nuclear weapons, was way better.

WW1 pretty much matured the world, it caused the feudal europe with its nobility bullshit and the very segmented world where every country just did its own thing and the US was pretty isolationist to enter what we call the modern times. WW2 then showed us how destructive we can get if we overdo it. After that the leaders of the world all came together and etched out the world that we live in today. This was after WW1 and refined after WW2.

In memory of WW1 there's been a lot of articles in the newspaper and shows on the radio about regional things that happened in WW1, I found those very intruiging. I also bought the Eos (Belgium's Scientific American) special edition about WW1 with tons of great articles about the specifics of the war, the birth of the tanks which were more destructive to your own forces than the enemy at first, the terrible trench warfare and much more. Super interesting stuff.

WW2 was also an extension of WW1

Today, Putin is galvanizing nationalism due to a poor economy. If he didn't do this, he would likely lose power. Sanctions are further his need for nationalism and aggression. Imagine this for post-WW1 Germany but 10x worse. Germany was all but destroyed by WW1 and the treaties Britain and France imposed. Then the Depression came along and tightened the noose of the most populous nation in Europe. Germany's only respite was Nazism

Nationalism and conquest are powerful things. I think it was the Assyrian empire thousands of years ago whose foundational philosophy was conquest. Ironically, after it had nowhere else to conquer, it collapsed

Russia has a poor economy? Russia's debt is 7.7% of GDP, compared to 70% for USA. USA also has the higher unemployment rate. The American economy is in much worse shape due to the massive amount of debt. The only reason the American economy hasn't already collapsed is because oil is traded in dollars, which allows America to print off money without a care. But that won't go on forever. Russia is the world's leading oil producer, the 2nd largest gas producer, has the largest gas reserves, the 2nd largest coal reserves, and the 8th largest crude oil reserves. Russia are doing just fine. America are only doing fine as long as the can continue to force other nations to trade in dollars.

Also, today's comparisons between Russia's "aggression" and Nazi germany is very much misguided, and very offensive. We're supporting Ukraine, a nation that removed a democratically elected president and replaced him with a Western puppet who has links to neo-Nazis parties. The Ukranians are the Nazis, not the Russians. People seem to forget that Russia suffered horrendous losses fighting the Nazis in WWII, is it any wonder they don't want Nazis taking control of their neigbouring country?

boost, in case you're wondering, here's a good article explaining part of the dynamic

    http://www.vox.com/2014/8/29/6082769...vading-ukraine

tl;dr: putin's power relied heavily on economic growth. when that stalled with no recovery in sight, he had to turn to nationalism to maintain legitimacy. his foreign actions are a product of this. in this regard, it was the same kind of thing with nazi germany, just far worse

russia isn't as stable as people may think. putin is basically a dictator and every russian knows it, but he's not powerful enough that he can maintain legitimacy if the people turn on him. russia is a weird sort of pseudo-modern nation where its older population is used to a North Korea type of society yet they experienced it collapse and were a part of making it collapse, and the newer generations are more internationally and modern minded yet still suffering from this hangover. russians are still pretty soviet traditionalists but they have enough populous power to overthrow any government that isnt doing what they want, which is basically growing the economy or, push come to shove, sounding the war drums against the west

If being intoxicated means you can't give consent, buying something while drunk means the seller stole from you and getting a lift while drunk means you've been kidnapped

It's official, feminism is bullshit. The galactic idiocy of the claim I've seen too many people make, that inebriation means consent can't be given, is just too much for me to handle. The only option is that Rush Limbaugh has been right all along

If you go into a business, pay for and get a tattoo while you are drunk, and the tattoo artist gives you the tattoo knowing that you're drunk, is that ok?
So you click their picture and then you get their money?
  40. #14965
I'm not sure I can answer that. Asking me my opinion on tattoo etiquette is like asking an asexual eunuch his opinion on sex etiquette

That said, there are some obvious problems. If a guy stumbles in the door and wants a big red SISSY on his lower back, it's probably better for the artist to show him the door. If a girl stumbles across the room and wants to get barebacked by a total stranger, it's probably better to reject. In the former, if the artist inks him anyways, it should probably be unethical since it's a business and stuff. In the latter, if the guy still bangs her, he's basically a douchebag and a dumbass, but it still isn't rape

Liquid courage does not eliminate your ability to consent. It increases the amount of things you'll consent to. Somebody engaging in any consent given may be an idiot, but he's not a rapist. It's ironic that the "my baby, my body" crowd wants women to have autonomy over themselves when it comes to abortion, but after a couple drinks, they go full Stockholm's and need the state to tell them what they can consent to.
  41. #14966
I think the idea that drunk consent can't be given is borne out of a desire to stop the situation where college chicks get black out drunk at a frat party and wake up with pants around ankles. That is a problem, but addressing it through consent is the wrong way to try to solve it.

Instead we should be trying to solve the many things that actually create that scenario: culture-wide sexual suppression that incentivizes all parties to express themselves in dangerous ways, ass-backwards education systems that force young adults to have the experience and wisdom of children, intoxicants hypocrisy that makes over-drinking oh so appealing for youths, etc

There is a line. And that line is closer to black out than it is buzzed. If I were too drunk to take care of myself, I'd rely on others to keep me set.

I've always had a strong drinking memory. I remember much better than others and I drink harder than only a few dedicated drunks. I seriously doubt you could get me drunk enough to get a tattoo unless I was draining deceptively strong shots to the point I was not registering where I was. At that point, I also don't like moving, so you'd have to drag me to the chair.

    Good question, though.

Ordered a $0.52 car part today online.

The first site I tried to order from wanted a little more than $20 for shipping.

    I settled for $6 shipping.

Well since this is basically a blog thread, today my damned kid (read: me) forgot his bag, but instead of immediately going home to get it, I decided to return the goddamned wall mounts for the network jacks I purchased from ye olde local home theater shoppe for the network cable I just ran around my new house. You see, they sold me the wrong mounts, even tho they also sold me the jacks

I watched the dude that sold me the wrong ones desperately trying to find the right mounts, to the point of hacking away at plastic nubs that were obviously not meant to come off with a utility knife, making me question my decision to use this particular small town home theater shoppe. Then after mashing his keyboard for what seemed like hours, he called the boss to see if he was allowed to refund me the $9.56 in cash, instead of to my debit card, to "save me time".

Then I dropped my kids bag off almost an hour after I said "I'll be right back to drop it off", got to work an hour and a half late, so I stayed late. A deadline is looming so they're buying everyone takeout in an attempt to coax people to stay late (dinner served at 7:30). Today's supper was tacos. Pretty good actually.

Got home late but wife was cool, and after putting kids to sleep, we negotiated sex for my help hanging pictures on the wall but then I find out she wanted sex anyway so she gets two things she wants and I get one thing I don't want but I still had sex so worth.

    And now

Got home late but wife was cool, and after putting kids to sleep, we negotiated sex for my help hanging pictures on the wall but then I find out she wanted sex anyway so she gets two things she wants and I get one thing I don't want but I still had sex so worth.

    And now

This is pretty great. If it's the standard level of your blogging skills, you should do it more often.

I consider blogging to be grotesquely self-indulgent, and few that do it are interesting enough to warrant their efforts. Last night I got baked and then felt like sharing under the guise of ironic blogging. lol baked levels.

But since you like it, and I DO like positive reinforcement, I'll do it!

    Hello,

I have returned from my honeymoon and here are some jokes that I wonder if anyone has made before:

    Good flop, bad flop

Feel free to add to this list if you'd like.

    All the best,

It's because we're English, we couldn't give royal fuck about Scotland.

It's actually really annoying wuf, Alex Salmond is a cunt of the highest order, but I have no influence and can't be assed to go in to one explaining why he is a cunt. I've pretty much exhausted my interest in it.

But one thing, I can't help but be curious how a yes vote will turn out. A no vote is probably in the best interests of both countries, but I've seen that and know where that road leads. Bring on the unknown I say.

Is the vote today? There have been articles about it daily in the local paper saying that it could go either way.

If Scotland are stupid enough to put their trust in a man who can't even tell them what currency they'll use in the event of a yes vote, then fuck them. England will manage just fine without them. It's an inconvenience for us because we'll have to move our nukes out of Scotland, and probably set up a proper border, but England won't collapse without the Scots. Scotland might or might not survive alone. They have plenty of oil, so they're not in bad shape. Still, their population is small, the weather is even fucking worse than ours, and so is the food. Tourism isn't exactly going to thrive there. They have golf and a pretend monster. Good fucking luck with that.
