$500 at the very least. This is assuming that you play 4-5 days/wk. If you play less frequently you can start with less. Since you are asking this question I assume you are relatively new to online poker so you will probably lose some money as you go through the learning curve. I started with $700.
Another consideration is where are you playing. Online, a $500 bankroll will allow you to take full advantage of deposit bonuses.

You don't need anywhere near that much if you join a poker site with "penny poker".
You can find NL for a $2 buy-in 0.05/0.1c blinds and limit for 0.02c/0.04c bets. If you play these games you could start with as little as $50 and build up from there.

If you know what you're doing, it should be enough for $5 SNGs on most sites as well. Even if you're completely new to the game, it should still last you a while, and long enough to get some experience.

If you are going to play micro-limit I would suggest that you just stick to "play money." It's roughly the same thing and it is free.
My suggestion was if you were going to play $5,10,20 SNG's, $.25/.50 NL or $.50/1 limit games on a regular basis.

Strongly disagree. The play at the PokerStars penny tables is light-years better than the play at the highest of the Party play money tables (where I turned 2k chips into just under 10m before I moved to real money.)

I hope you sold it on Ebay before you made your deposit, you could probably get $50 for that. I'm not joking either, people seel play money for real money. One post I read which had me howling for the Irony of it was.
"I never realised the value of play money". hehe still makes me smile.
