do you think the selective breeding of african slaves helped to lead to how the NFL is dominated by african-american players, etc

spoon, does the historically high level of intermarriage and incest in your neck of the woods explain why your question is retarded?

That appears to be the case. We don't know for certain due to lack of controls. I have no problem with contending for selection since signs point in that direction.
It actually makes very little sense that African Americans would not be more suited for labor than Africans since they indeed were selected for genetically. Just a couple generations of selective breeding can drastically change the genetic landscape.
I believe Yao Ming is the product of only one generation of selective breeding (two tallest athletes in China).

Idk I've thought it as long as I can remember, though I think wuf might have mentioned it in another thread.

It's a pretty beaten argument in the debate world..
The biggest reason the argument has so much negative traction, is that it was originally a KKK and Neo Nazi argument for why the african american should become the new working class, while the white man prospers off their sweat.
Then Chris Rock used it in one of his albums and the concept is funny and acceptable now.

imo, it's far more retarded to dismiss the overwhelming mass of statistical information that indicates that african americans predominate the elite athletic positions of our society as coincidence, than it is to propose a theory as to why this actually is the case.
also, this theory is like the LEAST racist of proposed explanations for this statistical anomoly (other one's involving different evolution branches, which essentially consider black to be a different subspecies from human being, or stating that it's not a race issue it's a socio-economic issue 'cause people play ball in the hood instead of reading, and so forth). i don't see anything that's even offensive about this question, much less racist

I don't know if it's just pure genetics or if selective breeding had something to do with it, but it's pretty apparent there are differences. I'm not going to look these things up, but I'm pretty sure the best "skill" position players in the NFL are almost all black, the best NBA players are black, the best athletes in general are black, etc. There is a difference, but who knows why?
P.S. If the word "black" isn't the word I should have used up there, substitute "African American" or "dark skinned person" or whatever you want. Saying "black" pisses some people off, while saying "African American" pisses other people off, so I don't know which way to go.
EDIT: I also have no problem with the statement/question that was given. It's out there, why not talk about it?

lololol, for real! people need to get together and agree on this one. i am by no means the type of person to be like "oh geez, here come the pc police coming to burn my constition" or anything, but as a writer i think i get a bit of a unique perspective on this. i have handed in a couple of stories where i've actually had to change the word or phrase i use to refer to black people TWICE because my professor that i had the semester i wrote it said i had to change "black" to "african american" (and even though it sounded retarded in the given sentence, i knew it was a taboo issue that i didn't wanna get into), and then i had my portfolio adviser look over my stories before i sent them for grad applications, and she was like wtf african american sounds so stuffy and pc and laughed at me when she saw i'd even made a racist ass character use the term in dialogue.
then i submitted it to be published in our school literary magazine and they had me change it back to african american but said obviously i can keep it in dialogue.
anyway, the version that said black got me accepted to a grad school in harlem, so obviously that's the one that's least offensive. AMIRITE?!

my focus was solely on african-americans who were descendants of slaves for the purpose of the discussion for obvious reasons etc etc

|
Assloads of environmental factors that still need to be controlled within control groups
Also, African Americans aren't the best athletes in general, just perhaps bigger leaner and stronger, which is close to what slave traders would select for, and is more suited for specific kinds of sports yet deleterious for other sports. But again, there are huge lack of controls. For example: black people don't even come close to dominating sports like olympic lifting or judo. Is that because they're less good at them on a genetic level or environmental level and in what way? Nobody actually knows

While this seems to be the case certainly, and I agree to a certain extent, lets investigate further.
In the specific case of the NFL, QB seems the most "prestige" position there is. Most of the starting quarterbacks in the league are white.
WR seems to be a position that endures a lot of punishment, and RB seems to be the position that endures the most punishment of all. Both of these positions have relatively low shelf life. Most WRs and RBs are black. In fact, with the exception of Mike Alstott and possibly Peyton Hillis, I have never seen a white RB.
I don't know how people choose to play a certain position, but could we argue social factors that drive a certain ethnicity towards a certain position? Poverty, schooling, "a way out", etc. that drives them to train hard at an early age and that better prepares them for the pros.
A stronger argument could be made about athletics, say, 100m sprinters. Most of the sprinters who got to the finals in Beijing were black. Scratch that, all of them were black. No hispanic, asian, european countries were represented afaik. BUT, and this is a big huge BUT, Africa itself was not represented. It makes a strong case that its an all black thing AND genetic selection thing, as all of those sprinters who were black are descendants of/had relatives who were selected at some point to partake in slavery (Jamaica, Trinidad, Curacao, USA, etc) which means they were the biggest and stronger exports Africa had to offer who were dumb enough to fall in whatever traps the slave traders put up and also who had to make the atlantic trip (in itself a cruel test of will, physical fitness and determination).
Just like we think math is an all asian/hindi thing.

I'd think poverty would be more likely a factor in which sports are most readily available. Making the argument regarding Judo/Fencing/etc dubious as social and economic factors play a strong role in which sports a particular individual has access to/ is pushed towards.

this is very true for baseball, as African-American numbers have gone down quite a bit over the last decade (or two). lack of places to play, lack of coaches, basketball/football players are more famous so they aspire to play those sports more often, basketball/football relies more on athleticism instead of a trained skill (such as hitting a baseball), etc, are all factors....

So I watched a espn 30 for 30 film about Jimmy the Greek. Apparently, his major fuck up which lead to his firing from CBS and final downfall was saying some stuff about black athletes that basically mirrors OPs thoughts.
was interesting viewing

Controversy
On January 16, 1988, he was fired by the CBS network (where he was a contributor to the NFL Today program since 1976) after commenting to WRC-TV reporter Ed Hotaling in a Washington, D.C. restaurant that African Americans were naturally superior athletes at least in part because they had been bred to produce stronger offspring during slavery:
"The black is a better athlete to begin with because he's been bred to be that way — because of his high thighs and big thighs that goes up into his back, and they can jump higher and run faster because of their bigger thighs. This goes back all the way to the Civil War when during the slave trading, the owner — the slave owner would breed his big black to his big woman so that he could have a big black kid."
According to the New York Times obituary, Snyder expressed regret for his comments, remarking: "What a foolish thing to say."

It's not so much what you say but how you say it imo. Not to mention the actual content of what he said is retarded in more ways than one.

Seems to me he more than likely got fired due to his unhealthy obsession with black men's thighs.
