US perspective may be different for various reasons but in the UK it's a 360. Not even close.

I got myself a Snes not long ago from Ebay.
Been plaing Mariokart, Streetfighter II and Super Tennis. The Playstation hasn't been on since.

I dunno, I think it largely depends on what your friends have. All of my friends have PS3s so I bought a PS3 to be able to connect with them. I'm sure I would've bought a 360 if I knew others who had one though..

Well the majority of my friends have 360s, a few have PS3s and one guy has both. I could have a lot of online fun either way though.
Didn't realise that player base was the only distinguishing feature between the two

The game selection is very different between the two. All in all, more people have 360 since there are more games to play on there. I personally have PS3 and would've been rather upset had I missed out on certain exclusive PS3 franchises such as MGS and LittleBigPlanet.
Also, I can't argue for 360 on this behalf (since I don't have one) but PS3 is a huge addition to my home entertainment system overall. I got it back when the 360 supported HDDVD while the PS3 supported Blu-ray (a huge reason Blu-ray won that war imo). Additionally, the USB ports on the PS3 (does the 360 support USB) make it easy for me to pirate movies or shows and watch it on my TV. Add that to recent support of Netflix and future Hulu support (what is 360's status with Hulu?). The point is that game consoles are no longer solely used for gaming; they are now SO much more.

What are you looking for? Which games, peripherals and such make a huge difference. I have a PS3, mainly becasue of certain games and the Blue-ray capabilities.

I'm an admitted xbox fanboy, so that would be my choice, but it really comes down to which console-exclusive games you want more and what your friends have if you want to play online.
PS3 has a bluray player as well, but that's not much of a bonus imo. You might feel different.

What is wrong with a good PC with a good graphics card.
It's always going to stay ahead of the consoles.
An Xbox is only an old PC and old graphics card.
The only useful additional games console for the family is the Wii because of its unique controller.

I like PC gaming too, but the initial cost, plus the upgrades you'll need to perform will end up being much more expensive than a console.
It also depends on the games you want to play. Fighting and sports games, for example, just plain suck on PC.

Look up the exclusive games on each console and decide which ones you like better.
Does having a Blu-Ray player matter to you?
What do all your friends have?
Would you play online a lot and does paying $50/yr for XBox Live matter to you?
I have both and both are good. There's really not a huge difference between the two anymore.

Actually it had absolutely nothing to do with that, and everything to do with the fact that Bluray has mandatory DRM, HDDVD doesn't.
HDDVD had much more market penetration, but all major film studios moved to Bluray and HDDVD was dead.

Some good advice ITT
The vast majority of titles I want to play are on both. Not fussed about blu-ray or paying for online.
Is the 360 library really that much bigger? what about downloadable games and content?

Get what your pals have. I have both and most of my online play is on the 360. Live is better then PSN, as well it should be cause you have to pay for live. PSN is getting close but no cross game chat is a huge fail. PSN Home is also a massive fail. However the more impressive piece of tech is the PS3, it looks slicker and the first party titles, I think, outshine the first party titles on 360. Cross platform games however tend to suffer on the PS3, people will say that has change but all you need to look at is the recent release of Mafia 2 to see that it hasn't entirely. All that being said more devs are looking to PS3 these days. Valve just announced that steam will be on PS3 which is huge and Bungie has left MS to go multiplat. Also think about the type of games you want to play if you are a twitchy fast paced gamer, get a 360, Halo, Gears, Crackdown are all super fun but fast paced action. PS3 Exclusives are more innovative IMO. Uncharted series is arguably the best new series this gen. Heavy Rain is innovative but a mixed bag of results for people. Metal Gear is a rad series but also tends to divide people. God of War could be the best 3rd person action series ever that's only on PS and Demon Souls was one of the best surprises of last year. In short if your going online with shooters think hard about 360, if you like more immersion an solitary experiences get a PS3.

Actually, I will. Playstation 3 was basically the means of getting a Blu-ray player into many homes. It was only AFTER its launch that studios exclusively began to stand behind Blu-ray with WB being the last big studio iirc.
It had everything to do with it.

I have both an xbox and a ps3, if you were deadset on picking between the two, I'd say ps3. If you go xbox, that's still not the wrong decision. You're not even picking between apples and oranges; rather between granny smith and golden delicious. Both are awesome, only you know your tastes, and it's not really that important to get it right.
However, SNES + gaming computer means all the best games of today with all the best games of yesterday. Do it.

I'm going my cousins on Sat for some cider pressing. Got some scrumped apples and a cider press. Lads only day of pressing apples and drinking cider whilst doing it. The cider will be ready for Xmas. Last years was 9%......
got some pears from a neighbours tree (fruit in London, who'd have thunk it?) to try and make some perry as well.

I mean I'd say I get like 3 bags of oranges a year, not including clementines. Those are better than apples. but I eat maybe 20x more apples.
