FTR, Fark and my college's community forum readable straight from my desktop. Other random stuff like a to-do list and an editable calendar as well. All sorts of things can be put on here.. like a clock (My system clock is an hour off because of daylight savings and I'm too lazy to fix it)




Second bonus: option to automatically scroll websites vertically or horizontally, so when I mouse over the FTR area it scrolls right for me cutting off that bar on the left that no one uses. And its perfectly sized so I dont see the ads on the right. Beautiful.


You can also manage all your RSS feeds from your desktop - but FTR doesnt have one. A bunch of daily comics. Any website can be put in there, so basically anything on the internets can go straight on your desktop in these custom pods. So awesome... then on the bottom right goes my desktop icons - I dont use them much, the only one that gets used is shortcut to my computer once in a while but I just use start/run for most of it. You cant delete the recycle bin, though. I dont like desktop clutter

Anyway. Awesome. Active Desktop used to be so pointless but now its awesome.

Yeah I found it because I wanted a to-do list / calendar, and everything else is just a booonus

head over to protopage.com and it'll make you a basic protopage. Top right, title yours will save it.

make your protopage how you like it, then up at the top middle click the gray drop down box, and drag your current protopage (first one, titled News) straight into the PUBLIC category. It should ask you if you want to copy or just move, so pick copy.


After that, follow the tutorial at http://lifehacker.com/software/active-desktop/ but instead of doing google's calendar (which I tried and didnt really like that much) use protopage.com/whatever

remember, your protopage will be PUBLIC if someone has your protopage.com/whatever hence mine is at protopage.com/euphoricism (and you might be able to copy it from there)

And you should be good to go. To edit your protopage you'll need to actually open the browser. Though you might get away with making a protopage widget, I havent tried.

Yeah my flopturnriver.com/phpBB2 one went blank yesterday right after posting, but all my others are working fine. Weird.

Got it working again. Delete the web page widget, make a new one. Put it on activedesktop again. Reload (f5 or right click / refresh) desktop, if it gives you the "security check" crap, reload it again. Workin good now
