idk about firefox but pidgin freezes every time I try to close it so I have to go to task manager and end the process.

afaik, 'random' malfunctioning programs and operations are a product of viruses and spyware and their related stuff as well as what happens with databases as information gets used and transferred over and over.
the solution for me has always been reformatting, and it always cures all these problems. it's not as hard as it sounds, and we always forget how fast and efficient the comp ran at first.

Winamp re-plays the first 2 sec of every song 3 times. I can't open movies into media player. Firefox can, and then I can drag and drop movies, but if I just double click a movie I get an error.
I plan on reformatting.

I remember I used to reformat like once a year... It actually feels really nice to just start all over. However it can be kinda annoying to have to redownload all the apps you are used to having. Also when I reformatted regularly it was before I had a digital camera, mp3's, and utorrent. So now if I reformat I actually have stuff that needs to be backed up, and sorting through my unorganized harddrive is a pain.

drop pidgin and get Trillian. I had nothing but problems as well. Trillian has never failed me.
Firefox crashes 3 times a week on me too, and once a week my computer reboots from some fatal error. I am thinking of a format too but I just did one about 3 months ago, I really don't want to go through that again either.

LOL
partition the harddrive, so all your data files are on one part and don't need to be backed up.
I just got a big external harddrive so I'm going to image my disk after reformatting. I'm pretty excited.

On windows XP,I would run check-disk first.Go to start-my computer-right click C drive-properties-then in the popup box, check both items then restart your computer and it will check and fix any errors on your disk.It takes abot 45min.If that dont help I would add some RAM to your memory maybe.I assume you and ran disk cleanup and defragged your computer already.

With Vista, I have a pristine image made of all my programs installed. I just format it, reinstall Vista, and then click "restore" and boom, I'm back in business

I had pigdin installed a while back and had the same issues so I toasted it. Was also getting frequent crashes with Firefox but with the latest updates it hasn't happened recently. Uninstall pigdin (I use Revo Uninstaller, it does a more thorough job of cleaning up leftover files), clean your registry (CCleaner) and do a CHKDSK http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265
This last step doesn't get done often enough or at all by most people but it resolves a lot of system problems that can otherwise result in a reformat. Defrag as well.
