I'm going to try this out, starting on Tuesday. Basically instead of sleeping for 8+ hours every day, I'll be sleeping for 2-4 hours by sleeping for 25 minutes every 4 hours.
Wiki entry on it here
So yeah, I thought this might be interesting to some out there, if you want to see how I'm doing I'll be blogging about it and you can hit me up on MSN, AIM or IRC pretty much anytime, since I'll be up most of the day

My HS English teacher claimed he had a friend that did this but for only 10 mins every hour. He said that his friend would literally fall asleep mid sentence every hour.

My roomate in vegas did this off and on for 3 months and could never get it to stick. He would get into this mode where he would be so damn tired he would fall asleep random places and just wake up a long ass time later. That screws up the whole thing when u do that. I would occassionally walk into his room to ask him something and he would be totally out of it in his computer chair and Id wake him up since I knew it was accidental sleep and he would be like ultra groggy slurring words asking what time it was and shit.
The problem is I think it takes a significant amount of time to get ur body used to it and can be broken very easily if you have to take a long ass drive or do something all day where u cant get your nap in. And its just as hard to start it the second time. At least thats how it was for him and I think he did it about 3 different times

Have you started reading what happens with sleep deprivation and comparing it to what you're experiencing? If what you're doing is working, you shouldn't be suffering effects from the sleep deprivation, right?

You have to understand sleep for this.
You normally sleep in 90 minute cylces, with the ending being REM sleep. REM sleep is basically the part of sleep that lets your body recover, it's the important part. As you can see sleeping for only 20-30 minutes you don't get REM sleep. This is why this is so hard. After an extended period of conditioning, the body starts to go into REM imediately when you go to sleep, so when you wake up after 20 minutes it as if you were sleeping for over an hour. Once you are adapted is when you start getting the benifits, but you have to be strick with your sleeping.

good luck.
my biggest problem would be, say you wanna sleep 25 minutes each time. when i lay down i can never fall asleep right away, so say you set an alarm for 25 minutes from now, what if it takes you 5-10 minutes to fall asleep?

lol, i find federico pistono's blog funny. he calls himself a success, but he sleeps 4 and a half hours a night, with 3 30 minute naps during the day?
i took a class on biological clocks, but i did terrible in it. your body runs on clock genes that cycle, and i'm pretty sure your organs run using different methods than your sleep does. i'm betting not sleeping in a 24 hour pattern has a lot of different negative affects on stuff, maybe i'll look it up.

But it could possibly be positive. Just because something isn't known doesn't make it bad.

It doesn't work like that. People who try to have 30+ minutes of sleep a few times a day find it much harder then say, sleeping 20 minutes every 4 hours. This is because of the way sleep works. By sleeping for 20 minutes you go straight into the state where you are in real sleep and rest properly. You cannot do this for 3 hours, making most of this sleep useless. The point of 20 minutes every 4 hours is feeling very awake when you wake up.
Also, I'm sure Harry has already seen this, but http://www.stevepavlina.com/blog/200...yphasic-sleep/ is a great blog from a guy who polyphastically sleeps now and how he did it.

It could, but the chances are stacked dramatically against it. Why? Because if it worked better another way, then evolution would have taken care of it and had us not develop an internal clock with a 24 hour cycle on it.

I think it's more of programming that we have a 24 hour cycle to things, because that is how we work. When babies are born they don't have this training and naturally sleep polyphasically.

polyphasic sleep, even after the person has been sleeping in that manner for months, cannot be maintained without an alarm clock.
without an alarm clock, you will revert from polyphasic sleep to monophasic sleep, never vice-versa.
if you must be sleep deprived, polyphasic sleep is good. 3 hours of sleep chopped up is better than 3 hours in a block. But a 7-8 hour block is still much better than 3 hours chopped up. you're still sleep deprived and have a decrease in functional abilities (this has been shown through experiments, despite bloggers rating their mental abilities as super duper).

Actually it can be maintained. You can nap and wake up in 20 minutes without and alarm. There are blogs on the net with people who say the do it without an alarm.
On a side note, why does anything unnatural always have to be bad? Medicines a doctor would prescribe for you are largely man made, doesn't mean they are bad for you. I could go on here, but have you ever thought that when we evolved we naturally could not do anything BUT sleep after the sun went down? Our body didn't plan on artificial light to someday exsist. There are 0 studies on how the body's natural clock changes after a long period, it's likely that it changes significantly.

Got a link to a blog of someone who says they wake up naturally?
Last sentence, what do you mean? there have been plenty of studies done on people's body clocks. If you lock a human in a room with no clock/sun, they will naturally start a free running sleep pattern of 24.2 hours. why would we adjust to that time, if 24 hours was programmed in, and we had no other programming? other similar animals free run based on anywhere from a 22-26 hour day. this is just some random adjustment that entire species' coincidentally make?
polyphasic sleep has already been shown through experiments by stampi to result in a decrease in functional ability, they are in weird old journals though that I can't find. it being unnatural is not the cause of it being bad, its just a coincidence. and, in many ways, medicine is not unnatural at all.
