My fiance is the most awesome woman in the world. If it makes me happy, it makes her happy.
Since it makes me quite a bit of money, too, umm...she's happy. Women like money.
Bro, become a winning player and your GF will STFU.

Take part of your winnings and buy them something nice or take them to dinner or whatever. Make sure that whatever you do that they know the money you used came from poker. More often than not they suddenly become much more tolerant.

The more I win, the more supportive my wife is. She plays too and knows her bankroll has auto-refill. Unfortunately, she's refilling often.
Never get your "significant other" interested in playing poker. It's better to have them bitch at you.

If they have a problem with it, fuck them. Don't let your girlfriend hold you back from doing the things you want to do in life. I can't STAND it when a girl just decides to hate something I do.
If you're locking yourself away for hours every day and missing out on the sunshine then yes, they should have a problem with it and you should get out more.

No kidding, that's pretty hot. Also "Love Supreme" is probably my favorite record of all time.
I figured out my win rate and told Mrs. LeFou what it is, and now all she complains about is the fact that I smoke too much when I play live games.
It can help to start forcing yourself to cash out a certain amount at regular intervals, instead of just building the BR. That way there's a tangible thing you can point to and say "here's why I play"

My fiance has started to play as well...She's just barely above break-even, but with bonuses, she's more than break-even. I BRed her for $500 and she has turned that into $945 (four $100 bonuses, so she's up $45 over like 9,000 hands). Not a great win-rate, but money is money. Plus, since I staked her she's going to give me back $750 someday, so that's nice.
Too bad the Party Skins had to switch stuff up on her or she'd be playing more often whoring all of the various skins...now it doesn't seem to be worth it.

Teach her MTTs, then she can play one a night. Have one huge score and feel like a winner forever!

Well, it is gambling. It's just when you think gambling, you both think gambling without an edge. Which isn't what you're doing.

i just don't get why significant others would constantly bitch and complain about poker as a hobby. i mean, if you like to do it, what's the big problem? ESPECIALLY if you're a break-even or winning player because then it's a FREE or PROFITABLE hobby. seriously!
of course there are exceptions if someone plays and is facing financial hardship because of it, or if poker is taking away from a big part of the relationship (telling your gf you can't see her because you're too busy playing poker everyday is a bad sign ...). but there is SO no reason for her to bitch about it just because it's "poker", that's retarded. girls are so stupid. get rid of yours and send me an application.

I am very, very lucky. I have an awesome wife as it is, but she is also an avid, serious poker player! We go to tournaments together and play. We have gone heads up at the end on occasion which is pretty funny. So while other guys are on the cell phone doing the "Yes Dear, No Dear, sorry dear" routine, I am just looking over to see how she is doing.
a quiet night at home is sitting on the couch on our laptops playing SnGs or MTTs
***Poker downswings do create variance in other parts of the relationship though
By the way, I am going to be a dad!! My wife is 11 weeks along and things are going great!

Exellent idea. She plays them occasionally - usually freerolls. She was doing sit-n-go's for a while and doing OK, but she's impatient and 'just wants to play some hands'. In fact, she started playing the worst game ever - Pot Limit Omaha. Everybody limps in and somebody hits quads vs. your boat or a boat vs. your flush or a flush vs. your straight. You can't get anyone to fold when you are ahead.
I'll just sign her up for low buyin MTT's and then let her know. One top 10 finish will probably keep her hooked. I think she's too impatient though.
The play money thing doesn't fly either.

My GF doesn't really care when I play poker.. although I really don't play that much. Most of my time on the computer is spent working on my business. My X-gf used to bitch at me all the time though for playing poker, Madden, skipping classes, you name it. It got very irritating.. that's why she's my x-gf.

My girlfriend is very supportive of it. Far enough to buy me anything hold 'em related she can find. Ive got the pajama pants, the clock, the neon bar light, of course the shirt, the hat, etc etc.
She actually told me if I didnt play hold em she'd have no idea what gifts to buy me.
She didn't like when I said, 'threesome?'. Can't win em all.

I've heard all the usual arguments from the wifey, but I think I've made at least some headway. She still thinks of it as gambling, but I've somewhat convinced her that I have a skill advantage based on results, and with bonuses even moreso. In reality I still usually struggle to find time to play, and that's usually when she's asleep or out. I can go to the boat and play for 10 hours straight no problem, but it's almost impossible to do that at home(when she is there). If I"m home then I should be spending time with her or there's something around that needs to be fixed/cleaned/moved/talked about/whatever.
So I generally play w/e mornings and late at night more then any other time. I don't even know how guys with young children manage to play much.

ngericl - replace "problems" with "evil" and you have the real answer. (money is the root of all evil)
Show them the money, and that should make things better. Problem with me is, I'm trying to hide the money until i have a significant BR, so I can play higher stakes and make nice cashouts here and there. Then I will just call it my part time job. Until then my official name around the house is "PA" ... for Poker Addict. If I showed her my BR right now she would be so pissed that I have all this money hidden from her, and want to spend it on something.
The only thing that kinda gets under my skin is how she gets so mad that I play poker all the time, when she spends more time in front of the TV than I spend playing poker. She says she wants to "spend time together", but if I'm on the laptop three feet away and she is watching TV, is that spending time together? I hate watching TV, unless it's a game or a good movie. So at least my hobby makes money. Don't get me wrong, I love her to death, (and she's a hotty) but we've had some really heated arguments over this topic. I'm just trying to stay focused and disciplined, and finally someday I will prove to her that I'm not doing all this hard work for nothing. I try to make the analogy that, "I'm an entreprenuer, just trying to build a successful business. I can sell the business now and have $XXXX dollars, or we can let the business grow and make an extra $XXX every month."

If we want to get technical the line is: "The love of money is the root of all evil."
It comes from the Bible. It's in the back somewhere.

wow seemed to have hit on a topic alot of people identify with! I also am hoping to build the 'ol BR enough to show her some real profits, then maybe she won't complain as much! ..hehe. She was impressed when our recent trip to tahoe ended up being totally funded by my play at the "spread limit" holdem tables @ Horizon (it was unreal the amount of fish there man!) in a couple hours.
I wish i could build up the point to where my BR could support playing stakes high enough to earn some real income- but, patience right? (currently playing the 5 and 10$ SnGs, with the occasional MTT thrown in)
thanks for all the feedback and comments on this thread y'all...and courtie the application is in the mail ..hehe

My finace tolorates my poker just fine.
But last month she said something to imply that my poker money could be better spent on something other than more poker.
So I told her that I would give her all my winnings for October. She let me play all I wanted for the whole month. And this weekend I handed her a fat envelope full of twenties. ($1,611.00 if you wanna know).
I couldn't resist handing it to her at my home game, in front of the fellas. Earned some respect points there, yaknow.
So anyway, I bought some patience from the GF...is that bad?

I'm sure you'll get some nice props from her friends as well. I tried this on a much smaller scale a couple weeks ago. I took her out to a nice dining establishment -maybe you've heard of it? - Red Lobster. I got really full after 4 rounds of all-u-can-eat shrimp and threw a couple her way when the waiter wasn't looking. Didn't have quite the same effect, but the effort was there.

So....you're "that guy," huh? Just kidding, but I do wonder sometimes who buys/receives all of that stuff they sell at the stores.

I am, I am. Not of my own volition, either

American girls seem to be on the greedy side.. ugh

I gave my fiance all my Oct winnings, but it wasn't like she went on a shopping spree with the dough. She had a medical bill she couldn't afford to pay off right away, and what I gave her was almost enough to pay it off entirely.
That's what she meant by "better things" to spend money on than MORE POKER. She certainly did not mean "I'm greedy...gimme, gimme". She actually had a "better thing" and I'm happy that my poker was able to pay off her (our) debt.
Plus the fellas at my home game gave me props. :P
