so, what happens when nobody really knows much about your online poker stuff - and then you kick the proverbial...
like, a bunch of us have material amounts of money kicking around on online poker rooms. Thoughts?

ideally if you have a significant amount of money online, you should have a will written up which included your user name and password. I think the best way for your next of kin to go about collecting the money would be to simply log on and withdraw it to your bank acct which would then be a simple matter to deal with. I would not under any circumstances alert the poker site that the deceased is .. well.. deceased. This would probably be the start of a long journey to getting the money off the site.
Realistically though, I don't think many players consider this when their online holdings reach a significant amount. I know I've had over ten grand (thinly veiled brag) online at one point and no way for anyone to know about it, much less access it in the case of my death.

I think its more than that. What do you think would happen if you contacted pokerstars or ftp or party and said, "hey, ya.. so-and-so died, and I'm their next of kin.. so if you could just like cut me a check or whatever, that would be great!"?

Wife knows where my username and passwords are kept. The list also has a couple trusted FTR names that even they don't know who they are. She'll contact them though if anything happens to assist in getting it off the sites.

Don't tell the bank that the owner of the account has died either until AFTER you've pulled the money into the account.
Most banks will block all transactions in an effort to prevent fraud after they find out the sole owner of an account has passed away. Get the money kicked in there THEN let them know he's died.

The older I get, the more I start wondering; Just what in the hell is going on here?

This is simple but arguably illegal.

I don't see how money in Stars is any different to any financial institution. If it's nominated in a legally binding will then the executor can a forward copy of the death certificate to Stars and then appropriate the money as specified in the will.
It's more complicated if there's not a will but it can still be sorted. I went through a similar process recently for a deceased relative with no will, obviously not for Stars but for various shares, bank accounts etc. There is hassle but it's not difficult. This is in the UK though and the amount of work needed to get the cash is bound to depend on the country you live in.

This is the United States and I'm guessing it would be a bitch to get the monies off. Simple, but illegal > legal bullshit that will take 8 years to get your monies.

I thought this was pretty interesting so I e-mailed Stars support to ask what their procedure was:

that's not true in my experience.
I've had a couple tech support call center jobs (calls from around the world) and russians are one group of people who generally stood out as being incredibly friendly and easy going.
The rudest people I dealt with were generally americans (felt they were entitled to always get anything they wished for, whether it was actually possible or not), and indians (the kind with the dot on the head, rather than than fireworks/casino kind) who tended to be extremely impatient. By rudest I don't mean on average, but the most memorable examples.
and LOL at the babelfish translation of what i assume was supposed to be spam
"the Rostov board of the declarations of acquaintance, the Grodnensk sites of the acquaintances"
I'll buy it!!
