It really annoys me when people don't pay off their bets. I had a bet not to post outside of the commune for X amount of days, and I won the bet, and now the person I had the bet with refuses to pay or even respond to me on AIM, and so I am frustrated.
In short, people who don't pay their bets in a timely manner are pieces of shit and are very bad for the image of the community.
Edit: Also, is it wrong to tell other people about someone not paying bets in a timely fashion? I mean, don't we have a duty to cover each other's ass and make sure that the same person doesn't screw over multiple people? That's the point of your word being worth something, right?

I have no interest in discussing strategy with a protege'. Your job is to remain quiet and listen. I have a very systematic approach that I will share with the right candidate and I promise that I will turn you into a force of nature and show you elements of the game of poker that you never knew existed.

honesty is the only thing a gambler has
not paying off bets in a timely manner is a surefire lack of honesty, and demonstrates a gambler FAIL

I'm surprised that as a moderator you would say that. Wouldn't that violate the following:
Quote:

8. Offers and requests for staking and discussions of others' personal finances are forbidden. Though staking is part of poker culture, we ask that you deal with such matters in private and with people that you know and trust. In any case, none of this should be brought up in our public venues.
|
I mean, if talking about your own personal finance is acceptable, then I could see talking about anyone who doesn't pay off bets on time since that affects everyone's personal finance.
It would be useful to have an admin clarify this for us.

I think gambling debts and poker go hand in hand. I think that it is a stretch to assume the rule you posted has much to do with a bet won or lost. Considering all the prop bet threads and non poker gambling done by our members on this forum, calling out a debt, ala Rippy, is perfectly fine. This rule is more so based on the staking agreements and owed debt payments.

Well interpretations of rules have been done in ways that could be considered a stretch before, so I'm just being careful (and respectful) enough to ask for a ruling by an admin before I give a name.

i have friends like this irl... just pisses me off, either they don't pay or take forever for like a $20 bet. annoys the shit out of me.
it's also even worse when you lose a bet to this kind of person and the second they win they demand the money instantly... even though it would take them x amount of days, weeks, months to pay.
anyway, if john doe doesn't want to be outed he should prolly pay up.

That will never be the case for me since I'm such a dreaded individual, no matter what my contributions to the community, and I think that's pretty much understood by all parties at this point.

Yeah I know, I hate this soooooooo much. It's like worse than being just straight-up stolen from.
There are people who just never pay off their bets like a few friends I had in high school, and then there are people who just take forever to pay their bets for no real good reason. I think it should be not only allowed but encouraged for us to out these people (because I think both types are probably equally bad) to protect the integrity of respectable gamblers as a whole.

I guess I failed to pay on one bet and that was an avatar bet with leg which I honestly do not even remember.
I'm a huge degen, but I never bet an amount or item I'm not willing to lose so I never have any problem in paying up. I also usually take the shitty end of the bet, so winning is more of a surprise.

I pretty much just stopped betting people or loaning people money, except for trivially small amounts. Too much yadayadayada, too little gain.

I would agree with that one. Scenario goes something like this.
Hey Lukie, Loan me the $20K and I will pay that back plus 10%. He loans Red the monies, Red then turns around and collects from you, pays Lukie and pockets a cool $3G

You're the first person to make reference to that incident, and that has little nothing to do with creating this thread.
By now everyone on FTR has probably heard about dwarfman waiting almost a month to pay Muzzard after the end of June after making a bunch of excuses as to why he couldn't pay, so I don't see why you would think I would make a thread referencing that.
My guy mysteriously came back away from AIM after I sent him a link to this thread and decided to pay me, which is funny since he hasn't responded to me in the past few days but has to other people like a minute later.

could someone who can make a call about this (xianti?), I've been considering a couple of prop-bets about winrates and hands - and don't want to risk involving a non-pay-out loser.
Then again, villain may simply not be online at the moment! spoon, has john doe been posting since the bet finished?

Yes. Since my guy paid the bet I won't post who it was since there's probably some animosity against him at the moment and I don't want to blow open a can of shit over nothing.
I would also like to see an admin make a call in reference to whether the rule I noted above covers talking about people paying/not paying prop bets.

in the gambling community it is duty to out those who renege on bets.
if in the future you dont want to post about it because of who you are then just PM or IM it to me or somebody else and we'll post it with no second thought.
outing the renegers and being punished would have a major backlash in the community since we all unanimously agree that its very important to keep the information available and honest

So while we're on the topic of people who haven't paid off bets within a reasonable amount of time, I guess dwarfman just outed himself. I don't fail to understand any aspect of that particular situation, and I don't really care to. If you want to leave FTR because you're so ashamed of what you did, then that's fine, but don't hijack my thread with your personal drama please.

"The Dragon in My Garage" by Carl Sagan
I say onto you, I've felt the dragon! I felt the touch of his tail, the breath of his fire, and I know without a shadow of a doubt that the dragon exists!

I hear you. I used to try to explain it but I've found that if somebody didn't get it before, I can't change their minds. The worst is when they come back with, "come on man, what's [x dollars] to you??".. *Sigh*. IT'S THE FUCKING PRINCIPLE DUDE.
Now I just chalk it up to variance, laugh to myself, make it a point not to spend any money on the person ever, and realize it's a cheap way to find out somebody isn't trustworthy.

I'd never thought of that, but you're obviously right.

I have no interest in discussing strategy with a protege'. Your job is to remain quiet and listen. I have a very systematic approach that I will share with the right candidate and I promise that I will turn you into a force of nature and show you elements of the game of poker that you never knew existed.
